Santa Paula homes

Older houses in the Santa Clara River Valley

According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Santa Paula was built in 1970. About three in five homes are detached single-family houses, about 56 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about one in eleven is a mobile home. A door that has run since 1970 has had a long life, so original springs, rollers and openers may be due.

Santa Paula was founded in 1872 when Nathan Weston Blanchard bought 2,700 acres and laid out the townsite, and it was incorporated in 1902. It calls itself the Citrus Capital of the World and sits on the north bank of the Santa Clara River, surrounded by fruit orchards. Main Street is the downtown center and has the city's oldest homes, with the Santa Paula Depot, the Santa Paula Art Museum and the Museum of Ventura County Agriculture downtown. The Union Oil Company formed in 1890, and its original headquarters is now the California Oil Museum.

Older houses can have garage openings that are not a standard size. We measure the opening and weigh the door before we order springs or a replacement, instead of assuming a stock size will fit.

  • Original springs and rollers on older doors
  • Openings that are not a standard size
  • Opener upgrades with battery backup

What Santa Paula conditions do to a garage door

Wikipedia's climate table for Santa Paula gives average daily highs of about 81 to 83 degrees in July, August and September, a record high of 110 and about 17 inches of rain a year. The inland valley runs warmer than Oxnard or Port Hueneme. Long hot summers bake the grease out of rollers and hinges, and winter rain collects in the bottom track and seal.

Fire is part of the city's recent history. The Thomas Fire broke out nearby in December 2017 and burned 281,893 acres, destroying more than a thousand structures, including some outbuildings just outside the city. News reports from December 4 describe evacuations threatening homes in Santa Paula, all Santa Paula schools closed the next day, and the Santa Paula Community Center served as a shelter. The Maria Fire started on October 31, 2019 at the top of South Mountain between Santa Paula and Somis, and Edison's October 2019 power shutoffs reached parts of Santa Paula too.

After a windy or smoky spell, wipe dust and ash off the tracks and check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other. Twice a year, oil the rollers and hinges and press the battery backup test button.

  • Wipe tracks and sensors after wind and ash
  • Test the battery backup twice a year
  • Oil rollers and hinges before the hot summer

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Rules to know

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Santa Paula

Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Santa Paula is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Santa Paula, not Los Angeles. We could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit, because the city's Building & Safety page does not mention garage doors or openers. The division is at 200 South 10th Street, phone (805) 933-4218, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. and closed every other Friday, and applications go through the city's online portal. See the city website.

Fire-prone foothills. Parts of the foothills around Santa Paula are fire-prone, but we could not confirm which addresses fall in an official Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. If your home is near open land, ask Building & Safety whether any exterior rule applies before you order a new door.

FAQ

Santa Paula garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Santa Paula?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Santa Paula (ZIP 93060) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Santa Paula?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Santa Paula?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Santa Paula?

Santa Paula homes use ZIP code 93060, and 93061 is for PO boxes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Does a garage door replacement in Santa Paula need a permit?

We could not confirm that, because the city's Building and Safety page does not mention garage doors or openers. Ask Santa Paula Building and Safety at (805) 933-4218 whether your door or opener work needs a permit before you order.

Should I plan for power cuts and wildfire smoke with my garage door in Santa Paula?

It is worth knowing where your manual release is, because Southern California Edison's October 2019 power shutoffs reached parts of Santa Paula. Keep the opener's battery backup working, and after smoky or windy days wipe the ash off the tracks and sensors.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.

Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?

Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.

Do you also repair gates in Santa Paula?

Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
