Garage Door Opener Repair
Opener hums but the door will not move, remote stopped working, or the door reverses? We repair openers and install new ones.
- Opener repair and replacement
- New opener installation
- Remotes, keypads and sensors
- myQ and smart controls
Garage door opener repair covers the motor unit, drive, remotes, keypads and safety sensors that open and close your door. We repair what can be repaired, replace an opener that has reached the end of its life and install new chain, belt and wall-mount openers. Call (213) 340-4232 and tell us the brand if you know it.

Chain, belt and wall-mount openers
Chain drive openers are strong and common, with more noise. Belt drive openers run quieter and suit garages under living space. Wall-mount (jackshaft) openers sit beside the door and free the ceiling, which helps with high ceilings or storage racks.
Brands we work with include LiftMaster and myQ products, among others. If your opener is older, we explain whether repair or replacement is the better use of your money.
- Replacement when parts are discontinued or the unit is worn out
- Smart control and phone alerts with myQ-compatible openers
- Battery backup, which California law requires on new residential openers (Health and Safety Code section 19892)
What the opener is telling you
Some of these have a quick fix you can try. If they do not work, call us.
| Symptom | Often caused by | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Motor runs, door does not move | Disconnected trolley, stripped gear, broken spring | Check the release handle; do not force the door |
| Door reverses before it closes | Sensors dirty or misaligned | Wipe both lenses, check the lights are steady |
| Remote does not work | Dead battery or lost programming | Replace the battery, try the wall button |
| Opener will not respond at all | No power, tripped outlet, failed board | Check the outlet and breaker |
| Loud grinding or shaking | Worn chain, gear or rail | Stop use and call us |
| Opener lights flash or beep | Sensor, limit or battery fault | Read the flash count in the manual |
A door that is heavy by hand has a spring problem, not an opener problem. See spring repair.
What a new opener installation includes
Check the door first
A new opener will not fix a door that is out of balance, so we test the springs and tracks before we install.
Mount and wire the unit
We set the rail, header bracket and motor, wire the wall control and set up the safety sensors.
Set travel and force
We set the up and down limits and the force so the door seals but reverses on contact.
Program remotes and keypads
We pair your remotes and keypad, test the safety reverse and show you how everything works.

Remotes, keypads and smart control
Most openers sold today can pair with a phone app and a keypad. That means you can close the door from the street, give a visitor a temporary code and check whether the door was left open.
We also sell and program remotes, keypads and receivers. See remotes and parts and access control.

- Replacement receivers and sensors

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review

Garage Door Opener Repair: questions we hear
How long does a garage door opener last?
Many openers run about ten to fifteen years with normal use. Wear shows up in the drive, the gear and the circuit board.
Should I repair or replace my opener?
Repair makes sense for sensors, remotes, a single worn part or a failed board on a newer unit. Replacement makes sense when the opener is old, noisy or no longer supported.
Can you install an opener I bought myself?
Yes, in most cases. Tell us the brand and model. We also check the door balance and tracks before we mount it.
Why does my opener work with the wall button but not the remote?
That is usually a dead remote battery, lost programming or a weak receiver. We reprogram or replace the remote.
What is a wall-mount opener?
A wall-mount or jackshaft opener sits beside the door and turns the spring shaft directly. It is quiet and frees the ceiling.
Does a new opener need battery backup in California?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says a residential garage door opener sold or installed in the state must have a battery backup that keeps it working during a power outage. It also means that a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older opener without that backup. We install models that meet the rule.
