A big South Coast town of villages, farms and Buzzards Bay shoreline
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Dartmouth has about 12,900 housing units and about 12,200 households, and about three in four households own their home. The median home was built in 1973, and about 76 percent of the homes are detached single-family houses. The median owner-occupied home is worth about $496,500.
Wikipedia says Dartmouth was settled in 1652 and incorporated in 1664, and that it is the third-largest Massachusetts town by land area, about 16 miles from the Freetown line to Buzzards Bay. It names the villages of Hixville, Bliss Corner, Padanaram, Smith Mills and Russells Mills, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sits in the Smith Mills area.

What Dartmouth weather does to a garage door
Dartmouth has no climate table that we could read, so these figures come from the nearest NOAA table we found, Wikipedia's normals for New Bedford, which touches Dartmouth on the east: a January mean daily high of 38.1 degrees and low of 22.1, a July mean high of 84.0, about 52 inches of precipitation and about 32 inches of snow a year. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping.
Wikipedia says Hurricane Bob on August 19, 1991 hit Massachusetts hardest of any state, with gusts to 89 mph at a Buzzards Bay station and a surge of 5.8 feet at New Bedford. Near the water, salt air rusts springs, tracks and hinges, and a power cut leaves only the manual release.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Rinse salt off exposed hardware when you can, and clear ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter
- Rinse salt from exposed hardware near the shore
- Know where the manual release is

Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
Town permits. Dartmouth's Building Department is at 400 Slocum Road, Room 210, phone 508-910-1820, open Monday 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, Tuesday to Thursday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and Friday 8:00 am to 11:00 am. The town says all construction permits are issued through that office, and permits can be requested through its online portal. The town's permit FAQ says a permit is needed to build, alter, repair or remove a building or structure and points to section 105 of the state code; it does not name doors or garage doors. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so call before the work or visit dartmouthma.gov. Russells Mills Village is a National Register historic district; we could not verify any local design rules for garage doors there or in Padanaram.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit, but it does not mention garage doors, so the answer from the town is the one that counts.

Dartmouth garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Dartmouth?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Dartmouth (ZIPs 02747 and 02748) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Dartmouth?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Dartmouth?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Dartmouth?
Dartmouth has two street ZIP codes, 02747 (including North Dartmouth) and 02748 (including South Dartmouth and Nonquitt). ZIP 02714 is a PO-box ZIP and is not used for street delivery. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Dartmouth require a permit to replace a garage door?
Dartmouth's Building Department pages do not name garage doors, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the department at 508-910-1820 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors in Padanaram and South Dartmouth?
Yes. We serve every village of Dartmouth, including Padanaram, Smith Mills, Russells Mills, Hixville and the roads toward Buzzards Bay. Salt air is hard on springs and hinges near the water, so tell us your street and we confirm the visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
