If your homeowners association requires approval for exterior changes, California Civil Code section 4765 says it must follow a written review process, decide in writing and explain any denial. Dark colors can cause thermal bowing on insulated doors, and painting a door yourself can void the factory paint warranty. Get approval before you order.
Do I need HOA approval for a new door or color?
Only if your governing documents say so. Under Civil Code section 4765, when an association requires approval for a physical change to your property, it must use a fair, reasonable and prompt review process written into its documents, with deadlines for its response. Ask for the architectural guidelines before you pick a color, and apply before you order.
Include the door style, the color name or sample, the window pattern if any, and a photo of the house. A complete application is easier to approve.

Myth: the HOA can refuse without saying why
Fact: section 4765 says decisions must be made in good faith and cannot be unreasonable, arbitrary or capricious. Every decision must be in writing, and a denial must explain the reason and describe how to ask the board to reconsider at an open meeting.
This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Read the section in the sources.
Myth: any color I like is fine
Fact: the association's rules decide. Many HOAs list approved colors or ask that a door match the trim or the house. A door in a neutral shade close to the trim is usually the safest request, but ask your association, because rules differ.
Are dark colors a bad idea?
Dark paint absorbs heat. Amarr says it can cause thermal bowing on insulated doors: the outside surface heats up more than the inside, and the door can curve. Amarr calls this a normal trait of insulated doors, not a manufacturing defect. For wood doors, Amarr does not recommend dark shades or stains on southern or western exposures.
If you want a dark finish, ask the maker which dark colors it offers factory-finished for that door. Our typical price for a custom color on a new door is add $300 to $1,200, confirmed after we see the door.
Quick answers
Do I need a permit and HOA approval to replace a garage door in Los Angeles?
HOA approval is needed only if your governing documents require it. Permit rules are set by your city, so ask the building department before you order. We confirm the opener rules for a new door.
Can an HOA deny my garage door color?
It can, if its written rules require approval and the decision is reasonable. California Civil Code section 4765 requires the denial to be in writing, give the reason and explain how to ask for reconsideration.
Do dark garage doors warp?
Insulated doors in dark colors can bow in strong sun, which Amarr calls a normal trait and not a defect. Ask the maker which dark finishes it offers.
Does painting my garage door void the warranty?
Amarr says painting a door outside the factory voids the paint finish warranty. Check your own door's warranty first.
Can I paint a door myself?
You can repaint, but read the warranty first. Amarr says painting a door outside the factory voids the paint finish warranty. For steel it recommends a premium exterior-grade acrylic latex paint and not oil-based paint. On a wood door, paint adds weight, which can change the spring tension and how the door and opener perform. See painting and refinishing a garage door.
