Most garage door windows sit in the top row, above the average person's line of sight, so you get daylight without a clear view into the garage. Styles range from plain rectangles to arched, divided and decorative panes. Frosted, tinted or seeded glass adds privacy, and insulated glass helps in an attached garage. Garage Door Windows: Styles, Placement and Privacy
Where do windows go on a garage door?
Clopay says most garage door windows go in the top row, above the average person's line of sight. That placement balances daylight and privacy: people see sky and ceiling, not your cars or tools. The same top-row look works on carriage-style, traditional and contemporary doors.
Other layouts exist. Windows can fill a vertical strip down one edge, sit off-center in a pattern for a modern look, or fill most of the door with full-view glass. A staggered or offset pattern suits modern homes better than evenly spaced squares.
Which window styles are there?
Shapes include rectangles, squares, arches and circles. Divided-lite and decorative-grille designs give a classic look, and arched or cathedral-style windows suit traditional homes. Clopay's designer collections include Art Deco, Tuscany, Colonial and Prairie-style patterns.
- Plain rectangular panes: clean and simple, good for modern and ranch homes
- Divided lites or grilles: a traditional look; some grilles lift out for cleaning
- Arched or cathedral tops: Mediterranean and traditional homes
- Long horizontal rows: contemporary doors
- Vertical strips: a modern accent along one side

Match the house
Choose windows that suit the home's style, such as Craftsman, farmhouse or contemporary. If your front door has windows, Clopay suggests matching their shape or choosing a complementary design. Color matters too; see garage door colors and HOA approval.
Which glass for privacy?
Clear glass admits the most light. Frosted, tinted or seeded glass gives privacy while still letting daylight in. Tempered glass breaks into small pieces, and laminated glass has a plastic layer between panes and is harder to break. Acrylic or polycarbonate is lighter and resists cracking but scratches more easily.
For an attached garage, insulated glass helps keep heat in during winter and out during summer, and Clopay says double- or triple-pane windows perform the strongest. Our typical upgrade to insulated glass is add $400 to $1,200, confirmed after we see the door.
Can I add windows to the door I have?
Clopay's guide recommends buying a new door with windows rather than adding windows to an existing one. Extra weight can strain the springs and the opener, and a replacement panel may not match the faded finish of the rest of the door. If the springs are not matched to the new weight, stop using the door and call a technician.
If a pane is cracked, see replacing garage door window panes. On most Clopay collections damaged window glass can be replaced.
What do windows add to the cost?
Windows add to the price of the door, but they can also add daylight, curb appeal and a usable workspace. The price depends on the door line, the window style, the number of panes and the glass. Ask for the quote to list the window style, glass type and whether the glass is insulated, so you can compare offers line by line. See new garage doors.

Questions people ask
Where should windows go on a garage door?
Usually in the top row, above the average person's line of sight. That gives daylight with limited view into the garage.
Can garage door windows be frosted for privacy?
Yes. Frosted, tinted and seeded glass add privacy while still letting in daylight, and solid panels give the most.
Does adding windows make a garage door heavier?
Yes. Extra weight can strain the springs and the opener, which is why Clopay recommends buying a new door with windows instead of retrofitting.
Are windows in garage doors insulated?
They can be. Insulated glass units help keep heat in during winter and out during summer, and double- or triple-pane glass performs the strongest.
