What Morgan Hill conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table uses the Western Regional Climate Center station at Morgan Hill for 1948-2016. It puts the average high at 86.4 degrees in July and 86.9 in August, with an annual average of 72.6. The article's rain figures conflict, so we say roughly 19 to 22 inches a year, almost none in summer. We did not verify wind records, record highs or power outages for the city. Dry summer heat ages rubber seals and lubricant, so give the door a check before July.
The 1984 Morgan Hill earthquake, which struck on April 24, 1984 at a magnitude of about 6.1 to 6.2 according to the USGS, ruptured about 30 kilometers of the Calaveras Fault. Wikipedia places that fault about a mile northeast of the city and the San Andreas about 12 miles southwest, and lists the Coyote Creek Fault, rated potentially active, running through town. During the August 2020 SCU Lightning Complex, evacuation orders and warnings covered east unincorporated Morgan Hill and Gilroy, and the warning was lifted on August 28, according to news reports. We could not verify a fire hazard zone for any city street.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and press the test button on the battery backup. After a quake, look at the tracks and cables before you run the door.
- Check the tracks and cables after a quake
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Test the battery backup twice a year

Suburban houses and townhomes between two mountain ranges
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Morgan Hill was built in 1990, which is newer than in San Jose or Gilroy. About 72 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, about 59 percent of all homes are detached houses and another 18 percent are attached, so most garages here belong to a house or a townhome. The median owner-occupied home value is about $1,210,200. A door from 1990 has seen thousands of cycles, and its springs are near the end of their rating.
Wikipedia says the town was incorporated on November 10, 1906, sits about 24 miles south of downtown San Jose, and lies between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range. Downtown runs along Monterey Road with the Third Street Plaza, and Villa Mira Monte, an 1884 building, houses the museum and historical society. Madrone, the northern district, was annexed in 1959. We could not verify any named gated community or association rules.
Tell us your cross street and whether the garage is a single door, a pair or a townhome bay, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs, and we add a battery backup when an older opener is replaced.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina Β· Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela Β· Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |

| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Battery backup, permits and design rules in Morgan Hill
Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Morgan Hill is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Morgan Hill. Building and Fire Prevention is at 17575 Peak Avenue, and the city lists (408) 778-6480, permits@morganhill.ca.gov and weekday hours of 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Applications and plans are emailed as PDF files. The city pages we read do not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit. Call the Building Division at (408) 778-6480 or check morganhill.ca.gov before the work.
Contractors and historic buildings. For permits the city asks a contractor to show a city business license, workers' compensation proof and a state contractor license. We could not verify any historic district or hillside rule for garage doors, so if your home is old or in a planned community, ask the city or your association before you order.

Morgan Hill garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Morgan Hill?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Morgan Hill (ZIP 95037) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Morgan Hill?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Morgan Hill?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Morgan Hill?
Morgan Hill homes use ZIP code 95037. ZIP code 95038 is for PO boxes only. San Martin, to the south, is unincorporated and is not part of the city, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it. We also serve nearby San Jose and Gilroy.
Does a garage door replacement in Morgan Hill need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Morgan Hill, because the city pages we read do not mention garage doors. Call the Morgan Hill Building Division at (408) 778-6480 to ask whether your door or opener work needs a permit.
Can an earthquake knock a garage door off its track in Morgan Hill?
Strong shaking can loosen track bolts, shift tracks or slip a cable on any door. The Calaveras Fault lies about a mile northeast of Morgan Hill, according to Wikipedia, and the 1984 earthquake ruptured part of it. After a quake, do not run a door that sticks, sits crooked or shows a loose cable. Call us, because a damaged spring or cable is dangerous to lift by hand.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Morgan Hill?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
