Cracked Garage Door Hinges and Brackets: What to Look For

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Repair guides

Short answer

Check the hinges and brackets on your garage door every few months for cracks, bent metal, loose bolts and rust. Tighten loose hardware gently and lubricate hinge pins. Clopay says damaged hinges should be replaced and recommends a professional do it, and bottom brackets must never be removed while the door is under tension.

Quick answers

Can I keep using a door with a cracked hinge?

Stop using the door. A cracked hinge lets a panel shift and strains the hinges next to it, and Clopay says damaged hinges should be replaced.

How often should I tighten garage door hardware?

Check every 3 to 6 months. Vibration loosens bolts and brackets over time. Tighten gently, because overtightening can strip threads or damage door parts.

Can I replace a garage door hinge myself?

Clopay lists hinges as a repair part but recommends a professional replace them. The bottom brackets must never be removed while the door is under tension.

How do I know which hinge to buy?

Match the old hinge in shape, hole pattern and position on the door. Clopay says different hinge types belong in specific places, and heavier doors need sturdier ones.

The full explanation

What hinges and brackets do

Hinges connect the panels so the door can bend as it moves along the tracks. Clopay says different hinge types go in specific places on the door, and that heavier or larger doors need sturdier hinges. The wrong type or size causes early wear or damage. Brackets hold the rollers, the cables and the track in place, and the bottom brackets carry the lift cable.

What to check, and when

Every month

  • Look along each hinge for cracks, bent leaves and gaps where a panel has shifted
  • Listen for new rattles, pops or squeaks

Every 3 to 6 months

  • Lubricate the hinge pins with a silicone-based product and wipe off the excess, as Clopay advises
  • Check that bolts and screws on hinges and brackets are snug. Vibration loosens them
  • Look for rust or oval-shaped holes around bolts

Spring and fall

  • Look at the bottom seal and the weatherstripping, since winter cold can crack rubber
  • Run the balance test in our safety test guide

Once a year

  • Book a full check by a technician: springs, cables, brackets, tracks and opener

Signs a hinge is failing

  • A crack in the metal, usually near a bolt hole
  • A bent leaf, or a hinge that no longer sits flat against the panel
  • A hinge that moves when you touch it, or a panel that shifts
  • Rust that flakes
  • A stripped bolt hole that will not hold a screw

A failing hinge lets the panel move on its own, which strains the hinges beside it. Clopay says damaged hinges should be replaced. If a panel looks like it is dropping or pulling away, stop using the door.

You or a technician

Look for cracks, bends and rustYes, monthlyYes, at each visit
Lubricate hinge pinsYes, with silicone-based lubricantYes
Snug loose bolts and screwsYes, gently, no overtighteningYes
Replace a cracked hingeClopay recommends a professionalYes, matching the old hinge's type and position
Touch the bottom bracketsNo, they are under cable tensionYes
Springs and cablesNoYes

Based on Clopay's replacement parts guidance. Never remove a bracket while the door is under tension.

Why you should not swap a hinge at random

Hinges look alike, but they are made for different positions on the door and for different door weights. A replacement has to match the old one in shape, hole pattern and position. Putting in the wrong one can leave the door out of line, and a repair that ignores the cause will crack the next hinge. If several hinges are cracking, the door may be out of balance. See why a door closes too fast.

What to do about it

A cracked bottom bracket needs a technician

The bottom bracket is connected to the lift cable. Clopay says it must not be removed while the door is under tension. Stop using the door and call.

A tune-up with us is $150 to $350, and we confirm the price of any hinge replacement after we see the door. Our 12-point safety inspection is $89 and covers the rollers, tracks, springs, cables and opener. See garage door repair.
