Garage Door Remote and Keypad Batteries in the Cold

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Openers and remotes

Short answer

If the wall button opens the door but the remote or keypad does not, start with the battery. Replace it with a fresh one, move closer to the opener, and check for LED bulb interference and the lock setting. Cold is often blamed, but the opener makers' steps start with the same checks in any season. If the wall button fails too, the problem is not the remote.

Why only the remote stops working

The wall button is wired to the opener. The remote and the keypad are wireless and run on their own batteries. So when the wall button works and the remote does not, the opener and the door are fine, and the fault is in the remote, its battery, the signal or a setting.

Many people notice it on the first cold morning. Cold is a common suspect, but the Chamberlain steps for a remote that works only some of the time do not mention temperature. They begin with the battery, then distance, then LED bulbs. Work through those before you assume anything else.

Causes vary by opener model. We confirm the cause on site.

Check it in this order

  1. Replace the battery

Use a fresh battery of the type printed in the compartment or the manual, and fit it the right way round. This is the first step in the Chamberlain guide.

  2. Move closer

Stand near the opener and press the button. If it works up close but not from the driveway, the signal is weak, which points back to the battery or to interference.

  3. Check the bulbs

Chamberlain lists LED light bulb interference as a cause of poor range. Swap the opener bulb for one the opener maker lists as compatible and test again.

  4. Check the lock

If the opener lights flash twice when you press the remote, the lock feature is on. Chamberlain says to press LOCK on the wall control to turn it off and then test the remote.

  5. Reprogram the remote

If it still fails with a fresh battery, the remote may need to be programmed again. Follow the opener's manual and wait for the learn light before you press the next button.

Keypads work the same way

A keypad is also wireless and has its own battery. If the keypad lights are dim or dead, or it works only up close, change the battery first. Check the model's manual for the battery type. If the keypad has a fresh battery and the opener ignores it, it may need to be programmed again.

If the remote is lost or damaged, a replacement is a quick job. See remotes and parts.

When the problem is the door

Stop if the door acts strangely

If the wall button does not work either, the door is heavy, crooked or stuck, or the opener hums and the door does not move, stop using it. Do not adjust a spring or cable yourself. Call a technician.

DASMA also lists a remote control troubleshooting guide among its technical data sheets, which is worth reading if your remote still fails after these steps.

Questions people ask

Why does my garage door open with the wall button but not the remote?

The wall button is wired to the opener, while the remote runs on its own battery and a wireless signal. A weak battery, interference, the lock setting or a lost programming is the usual cause.

Why won't my garage door remote work?

Replace the battery first, then move closer to the opener and check for LED bulb interference. If the opener lights flash twice, press LOCK on the wall control. If none of that helps, reprogram the remote.

Why did my garage door remote stop working?

A battery that has run down is the most common reason. A recent bulb change, the lock setting or a remote that lost its programming can also stop it.

Does cold weather stop a garage door remote?

Cold is often blamed, but the opener makers' steps do not mention temperature. Start with a fresh battery, because a weak one can fail first on a cold morning.
