Steel Garage Door Gauge and Layers: One, Two or Three?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Buying guides

Short answer

With steel, a lower gauge number means thicker steel, so 24 gauge is thicker than 25. Layers are separate: one layer is a plain steel pan, two layers add an insulation backing, and three layers sandwich insulation between two steel skins. Ask for the steel thickness and the layer count, not just the gauge.

1What gauge means

Gauge is a way of naming the thickness of sheet steel. The number runs backwards: a lower number is thicker steel, so 20 gauge is thicker than 24 gauge, as a Garaga buying FAQ explains. That FAQ also advises asking for the thickness of the steel on both the outside and the inside faces.

Thicker steel resists denting better in general, but gauge is only one part of how a door is built.

2Why the gauge on a brochure can mislead

The Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) says a gauge number is not the same as an exact thickness, and that gauge tables in the industry overlap. For example, a 24 gauge door with G40 galvanizing has a minimum thickness of 0.0216 inch under DASMA's technical data sheet, while one manufacturer's table would call that thickness 25 gauge.

DASMA also says the gauge a seller quotes should refer only to the galvanized steel skin, not to the pan and backer sheet added together on an insulated door, and not to paint. So when two doors list different gauges, ask each seller for the decimal thickness and what it measures.

3One, two and three layers

Clopay describes the three common constructions this way. A single-layer door is a thin sheet of steel with little or no insulation, often called a pan door. A double-layer door has insulation such as polystyrene attached behind the steel. A triple-layer door adds a second steel skin on the back and usually uses polyurethane, and Clopay says it gives the highest energy efficiency along with more strength and quieter operation.

Layer count and gauge are independent. A thick single layer still has almost no insulation, and a thin steel skin can be attached to foam for stiffness.

4Insulation and R-value

R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and a higher number is better. Clopay lists non-insulated doors near R-0 to R-2 and standard polystyrene doors at R-6 to R-9. Its injected polyurethane runs up to R-20.4 depending on model and thickness, and it recommends R-12 and up for homes with hot or cold climates or an attached garage. These are manufacturer figures, so ask for the rating of the exact model.

Compare like with like

Ask every seller for the steel thickness of the outside and inside skins, the number of layers, the insulation type and the R-value of the exact model. A quote that leaves these out cannot be compared with one that lists them.

5Which one fits which garage?

  • Detached or rarely used garage: a single layer can be enough and costs least.
  • Attached garage with a room above or next to it: two or three layers add insulation and quieter operation.
  • Busy household with kids and balls: more layers and thicker steel resist dents better.
  • Hot inland valleys or cold mountain towns: insulation matters most, so look closely at the R-value.

6What it costs and where we come in

Typical prices with us for a 16x7 steel door: non-insulated $1,400 to $2,400, insulated short panel $1,800 to $3,400, insulated long panel $1,800 to $3,600. Final prices depend on windows, color and size, and we confirm them after we see the opening. See insulated vs non-insulated doors and our new garage door page. Questions people ask

Is a lower gauge number thicker?

Yes. For steel, 20 gauge is thicker than 24 gauge.

Is 24 gauge or 25 gauge better for a garage door?

24 gauge is thicker steel, but gauge tables overlap, so ask the seller for the decimal thickness and what it measures.

What is the difference between one, two and three layer garage doors?

One layer is a plain steel pan, two layers add an insulation backing, and three layers put insulation between two steel skins.

What R-value should a garage door have?

Clopay recommends R-12 and up for homes in hot or cold climates or with an attached garage. A non-insulated door sits near R-0 to R-2.
