Short Panel, Long Panel, Flush: Garage Door Panel Designs

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 3 min read · Buying guides

Short answer

Short raised panels give a traditional, detailed look. Long raised panels look cleaner and more modern. Recessed panels sit inside a frame and range from traditional to contemporary. Flush panels are smooth with no pattern. Panel design changes the look, not the steel thickness or insulation, so compare those separately.

The main panel designs

A sectional garage door is built from horizontal sections, and each section carries a panel design. Clopay lists the common ones for steel doors: raised, recessed and flush, with raised panels offered short or long. Here is what each looks like and where it tends to fit.

Short and long raised panels

Raised panels stand out from the surface and, in Clopay's words, create depth and visual interest. Short panels cut the door into more, smaller rectangles, which reads as detailed and traditional. Long panels use fewer, wider rectangles for cleaner lines, and Clopay offers each depending on whether you want a traditional or a more modern look.

Raised panel doors are the classic traditional choice. Long panels fit well on wide, low houses such as ranch homes.

Recessed panels

Recessed panels sit inside a frame, like a stile and rail cabinet door. Clopay's Bridgeport line describes a narrow recessed panel with slim vertical lines as a contemporary feel, and an extended recessed panel with broad, symmetrical sections as more traditional. This design suits homes that want a calm, framed look.

Flush panels

Flush doors have a smooth face with no raised or recessed sections. Clopay's modern-home guide shows them in horizontal or vertical layouts, often in solid or earthy colors, and some are made with grooves. A smooth face shows the finish, so a flush door depends on good paint and a good installation. Our typical modern flush or contemporary door price is $3,500 to $9,000.

Panel design is not strength

Two doors with the same panel pattern can differ a lot underneath. DASMA says steel gauge is a number that can mislead, so ask for the decimal thickness, and ask for the layer count and insulation type. Our guide to steel gauge and layers explains how to read those.

Look at a sample on your wall

Panel patterns look different in the sun and in shade. Hold a sample section against the house at the time of day you see the front most, and check how the lines meet the roofline and the windows.

How to choose

  • Traditional home: short raised panels or an extended recessed panel.
  • Ranch home: long panels or horizontal grooves.
  • Craftsman home: carriage-style grooved panels with divided-light windows.
  • Modern home: flush panels or a narrow recessed panel.
  • Not sure: pick the pattern that repeats a line from your entry door.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between short and long panel garage doors?

Short panels give a traditional, detailed look. Long panels give cleaner lines and read as more modern.

What is a flush garage door?

A flush door has a smooth face with no raised or recessed panels, and it is common on modern homes.

Does panel style change how strong the door is?

Not by itself. Steel thickness, layers and insulation decide that, so ask for those separately.

What is a recessed panel garage door?

The panel sits inside a frame like a stile and rail cabinet door, and the proportions can look traditional or contemporary.
