A compact city of rentals, small houses and apartment garages
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, Cudahy has about 5,900 housing units and the median home was built in 1967. About 38 percent of the homes went up in 1959 or earlier, about 56 percent in 1969 or earlier and about 68 percent in 1979 or earlier. Springs and openers from those decades have had a long run of daily use, so we check the whole door.
The same estimates put about 59 percent of units in single-family homes, about 47 percent of them detached, and about 86 percent of occupied homes are rented. About one unit in four is in a building of five or more units, and about 7 percent are mobile homes. Many calls may come from landlords and property managers, so tell us who approves the work and who gives access.
Cudahy covers only about 1.2 square miles and was incorporated on November 10, 1960. It is named for meatpacking businessman Michael Cudahy, who bought about 2,777 acres of Rancho San Antonio in 1908 and sold the land off in one-acre lots. Florence Avenue runs through the city, which sits next to the Los Angeles River and the 710 Freeway.

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney Β· Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine Β· Google review

What Cudahy weather does to a garage door
Cudahy has no weather station of its own in our sources, so we use two nearby references. Downtown Los Angeles, about seven miles northwest, shows average highs near 77 degrees in June, 82 in July and 84 in August, a record of 113 in September and about 14 inches of rain a year. Maywood, about three miles north, shows an August average high near 89 degrees and about 15 inches of rain. Heat dries out lubricant, and winter rain settles into tracks and bottom seals.
Santa Ana winds blow across the Los Angeles area in autumn and winter. We found no Cudahy-specific wind or outage record, but a power cut can happen on any street, and an opener without a working battery backup cannot lift the door. Know where the manual release is and test it.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and press the test button on the battery backup. Check that the two sensors near the floor still face each other.
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Check the bottom seal after heavy rain

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Cudahy
Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
Cudahy permits. Cudahy is its own city, so its Building and Safety staff at City Hall, 5220 Santa Ana Street, set the permit rules, not Los Angeles. City Hall's number is 323-773-5143, and the city directory lists Building and Safety at extension 243. We could not verify whether a like-for-like garage door replacement or a new opener needs a permit there, so ask the city before a replacement. See cityofcudahyca.gov.

Cudahy garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Cudahy?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Cudahy (ZIP 90201) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Cudahy?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Cudahy?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Cudahy?
Cudahy uses ZIP code 90201, which it shares with Bell and the Bell Gardens area, so the ZIP is much larger than the city. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement need a permit in Cudahy?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Cudahy. The city sets its own rules, so ask Building and Safety at City Hall on 323-773-5143 before a replacement or a new opener.
Do you work with renters and property managers in Cudahy?
Yes. About 86 percent of occupied homes in Cudahy are rented, so tenants, landlords and property managers all call us. Tell us who approves the work and who gives access, and we book the soonest visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a simple job like a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Cudahy?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
