Garage Door Roller Replacement Cost

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

At Emil Garage Doors, replacing a set of rollers, sensors or a tune-up costs $150 to $350. The price depends on how many rollers the door has, the roller type and the door size, and we confirm it after we see the door. Nylon rollers with more ball bearings cost more than steel ones.

What roller replacement costs

Rollers are one of the lower-cost garage door repairs, and they are often replaced together because they wear at the same rate. Here are the ranges for roller work and the checks around it.

ServicePriceWhat affects it
12-point safety inspection$89Springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener checked
Rollers (set), sensors or tune-up$150 to $350Number of rollers, sensor type and door size
Off-track door repair$175 to $450Bent tracks, damaged panels or rollers

What changes the price

  • Roller type. Steel rollers cost less than nylon, and rollers with more ball bearings cost more than those with fewer.
  • Number of rollers. A larger door can have more rollers to replace.
  • Other worn parts. Hinges, tracks and cables wear on the same schedule, so a technician checks them during the visit.
  • Door condition. A door that has come off its track needs more work than a simple roller swap.

Nylon or steel rollers?

Nylon rollers

  • Quieter on the track
  • Rollers with 13 ball bearings are typically rated at about 20,000 cycles
  • Rollers with 10 ball bearings, about 10,000 to 15,000 cycles
  • Cost more

Steel rollers

  • Cost less
  • Can rattle and vibrate in the track
  • The coating can scratch or wear away and let them corrode

Rollers usually come with seven to 13 ball bearings, and more bearings generally means longer life. A plastic roller has none and is not worth buying. These figures come from a dealer's buying guide, so check your door's parts list for the exact roller it takes.

Signs your rollers are worn

  • Vibration or shaking as the door travels
  • Screeching or grinding from the tracks
  • The door lurches, sticks or rises unevenly

If you hear this, read worn or squeaky garage door rollers. A door that is crooked or has jumped its track should not be used until it is checked. See spring replacement cost if the door also feels heavy.

Why the bottom rollers are a technician job

The bottom roller holds a loaded cable

On most doors the lift cable attaches to the bottom fixture that holds the bottom roller. Spring tension acts on that cable, so removing the fixture is extremely hazardous. Do not loosen the bottom bracket yourself.

The other rollers are less risky, but a technician can replace the whole set in one visit and test the balance and the safety reverse afterward.

What a good quote includes

  • Whether hinges, tracks or cables are included or extra
  • Whether the door is balanced and the safety reverse tested before the technician leaves

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to replace garage door rollers?

With us, a set of rollers, sensors or a tune-up costs $150 to $350. The final price depends on the number of rollers, the roller type and the door size, and we confirm it after we see the door.

Are nylon or steel garage door rollers better?

Nylon is quieter, and steel costs less. Whichever you choose, more ball bearings generally means a longer life.

Can I replace garage door rollers myself?

We do not recommend it for the bottom rollers. Spring tension acts on the cable attached to the bottom fixture, so that work should be left to a technician.

How do I know if my garage door rollers are bad?

Vibration, screeching or grinding noises, and a door that lurches, sticks or opens unevenly are common signs.
