At Emil Garage Doors, an insulated steel 16x7 door costs $1,800 to $3,400 with short panels and $1,800 to $3,600 with long panels, against $1,400 to $2,400 for a non-insulated steel door. The foam core, the insulation type, windows and color move the price. We confirm it after we see the opening.
What an insulated door costs
Here are our typical prices for a two-car door, 16x7 feet. They are ranges because size, windows and color change the total, and we confirm the price after we see the opening.
| Door | Price | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Steel door, non-insulated, 16x7 | $1,400 to $2,400 | Size, color and windows |
| Insulated steel door, short panel, 16x7 | $1,800 to $3,400 | Insulation, windows and color |
| Insulated steel door, long panel, 16x7 | $1,800 to $3,600 | Insulation, windows and color |
| Custom color (powder coat, anodized or stain) | add $300 to $1,200 | Finish and door size |

What the insulation layer adds
An insulated steel door is built in layers: steel skins with foam between them. Clopay, a major manufacturer, says the insulation dampens noise from lawn equipment and street traffic, and that layered, glued construction adds strength and dent resistance. It also says insulation reduces heat loss in winter and keeps excess heat out in summer.
That is why the insulated rows cost more than the non-insulated one. You pay for the foam, the extra steel and the sturdier panel.
Polystyrene or polyurethane?
Polystyrene
- Rigid foam panels
- Lower R-values
- Typically the more budget-friendly insulation
Polyurethane
- Foam injected between the steel layers
- Higher R-values
- Usually adds more to the price
- Bonds to the steel for extra strength
Clopay lists polystyrene doors around R-6.5 and polyurethane doors up to R-20.4. Do not shop on the R-number alone. Building-science writers point out that a published R-value is measured at the center of a panel and leaves out the panel edges, the seams and air leakage. Good seals matter as much. See R-value explained.
Do you need the extra layer?
It depends on the garage. Clopay's guidance is R-10 to R-13 for an attached garage or a cold climate, R-15 or higher for extreme cold and R-6 to R-10 for a detached garage or a mild climate. A garage you use as a workshop, a gym or a room off the house gets more from insulation than one that only holds a car. For the plain comparison, read insulated vs non-insulated doors.
Budget for the opener
California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says a replacement residential door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that has no battery backup. If your opener has none, plan for the opener in the same quote.

What a good quote includes
- The insulation type and the stated R-value of the door
- Panel style (short or long), windows and color
- Whether the old door is hauled away
- Springs, hardware and seals included
- Opener work and battery backup, if needed
- The total price before work starts

Questions people ask
How much does an insulated garage door cost?
With us, a 16x7 insulated steel door is $1,800 to $3,400 with short panels and $1,800 to $3,600 with long panels. The price changes with windows and color, and we confirm it after we see the opening.
How much more does an insulated door cost than a non-insulated one?
Our non-insulated 16x7 steel door is $1,400 to $2,400, so the insulated version costs more for the foam core and the extra steel. The exact gap depends on the model.
Is polyurethane worth the extra cost?
It gives higher R-values and a stronger panel, so it suits attached garages and garages used as living space. A detached garage in a mild climate may not need it.
What R-value do I need for a garage door?
Clopay suggests R-10 to R-13 for attached garages or cold climates and R-6 to R-10 for detached garages or mild climates.
