Cottages, bungalows and homes from the 1970s
Fillmore is a small Ventura County city in the Santa Clara River Valley. According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey estimates, about 75 percent of its housing units are single-family detached houses, about 68 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and the median home was built in 1978.
Wikipedia describes the housing as mostly cottages, bungalows and older homes, with the oldest near downtown, and says over half of the homes were built after 1970. The same Census estimates put about 10 percent of housing units in mobile homes. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in Fillmore, so check your own association's rules.
Gates on older lots often have original hinges and posts, while newer ones may have operators that are a decade or more old. We start with the gate itself and then test the electronics.

What the valley does to a gate
Wikipedia's climate table for Fillmore lists mean daily highs of 81 to 83 degrees from July to September, a record high of 109 degrees and about 17 inches of rain a year, with June to September nearly dry. The page says summer temperatures can easily rise above 100 degrees, which is hard on batteries, plastic parts and lubricants.
Wikipedia's Thomas Fire page says Santa Ana gusts reached 60 mph in December 2017 and more than 250,000 Southern California Edison customers across the region lost power, and it names Fillmore among the Ventura County cities affected. It also says the 1994 Northridge earthquake hit Fillmore harder than any other Ventura County community. Wind and outages are reasons to keep the backup battery healthy and know where the manual release is, and a gate on a shaken post or wall should be checked for alignment.
Each season, test the backup battery, check that the gate swings or rolls freely and tighten loose hinges and brackets.
- Test the backup battery before wind season
- Know where the manual release is
- Check hinges and posts for movement

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Fillmore
City permits. The City of Fillmore's Licensing and Permits page points to the GovWell Planning and Permitting portal, linked from fillmoreca.gov, and City Hall is at 250 Central Avenue, (805) 524-3701. The page does not mention gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm whether a gate or its wiring needs a permit. Call City Hall before a new gate or new electrical work.
Emergency access. Gates can affect how fire and police reach a property. Ask the local fire department about key switch or Knox box requirements before you install or change a locked entry.
HOAs. If your neighborhood has an HOA with an architectural review board, ask before you change the design or color of a gate. We can write a scope of work for the review.
Safety standard. Automatic gate operators are covered by the UL 325 safety standard, which calls for entrapment protection such as photo eyes or safety edges. We test those devices before the gate goes back into service.
Fillmore gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Fillmore?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Fillmore (ZIP 93015) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Fillmore?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Fillmore means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Fillmore?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
A humming operator with a gate that will not move usually means the gate is jammed or a part in the operator has failed, such as a capacitor or gear. Stop using it and call us before the motor burns out.
How much does gate repair cost in Fillmore?
The price depends on what failed, the size and weight of the gate and the parts. We quote after we see the gate or photos, and before work starts.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Fillmore?
Fillmore homes use ZIP code 93015. ZIP code 93016 is for PO boxes only. Call us with your address if you live just outside the city, for example near Bardsdale or Piru, and are not sure we reach you.
Do wind and power outages affect electric gates in Fillmore?
Wikipedia reports Santa Ana gusts of 60 mph and widespread outages across the region during the December 2017 Thomas Fire, and it names Fillmore among the affected Ventura County cities. A gate with a weak backup battery can stay closed when the power goes out, so we test the battery and the manual release.
Does the historic downtown affect my gate?
Wikipedia describes a historic downtown centered on Central Avenue, but we could not confirm a formal historic district or any design rules for gates. If your property is downtown, ask the city before you change the look of a gate.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Fillmore too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Fillmore for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
