What Napa conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table uses 1991-2020 normals from the Napa County Airport station. The annual average high is 69.9 degrees and the average low is 45.6, with 31.10 inches of precipitation over about 61 days. The record high is 114 degrees on September 6, 2022 and the record low is 14, on December 22, 1990. We did not verify wind averages. The Napa River flood of 1986 revived interest in flood control, and voters narrowly approved a county sales tax in 1998 to fund the Napa River Flood Project.
The August 24, 2014 South Napa earthquake, about magnitude 6, struck at 3:20 a.m. on the West Napa Fault. City inspectors tagged 613 structures at first, and by mid-September 156 were red-tagged and 1,398 yellow-tagged, according to Wikipedia. As general advice, not a Napa statistic, shaking can knock tracks, springs and openers out of alignment. The Atlas Fire began October 8, 2017 on Atlas Peak Road, north of the city, and an evacuation advisory covered parts of the City of Napa. The Glass Fire burned from September 27 to October 20, 2020 across the region. A third-party site says parts of Napa's hillsides are in Cal Fire hazard zones, which we could not confirm officially, so check your address on the state map.
After an earthquake or any strong shake, do not run the door if it looks crooked or the springs look shifted. Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges and press the test button on the battery backup.
- Stop using a crooked door after a shake
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Oil rollers and hinges twice a year

Valley-floor neighborhoods, hillside streets and downtown apartments
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year estimates, the median home in Napa was built in 1975. About 63 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 64 percent of all homes are detached houses. The rest is mostly apartments, from small buildings to complexes of 20 or more units. The median owner-occupied home value is about $866,700. A door on a house from the 1970s often has its original springs and an older opener.
Napa was founded in 1847 and incorporated in 1872, according to Wikipedia. The Cayetano Juarez Adobe, built in 1845, is the oldest building, and the Sam Kee Laundry of 1875 is the oldest commercial building. We did not find designated historic districts and we could not verify any named homeowners association or gated community. In an apartment or condo building, we confirm who can approve the work before a visit.
Tell us the cross street and whether the garage is a single door, a pair or part of a shared building, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs, and we add a battery backup when an older opener is replaced.

What customers say

I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Napa
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Slams down or will not lift | A broken torsion spring | Replace the spring set, balance the door, test the safety reverse |
| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Battery backup, permits and design rules in Napa
Battery backup. California requires a battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state (Health and Safety Code section 19892). A new door cannot be connected to an older opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic overlays can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Napa is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Napa, not Napa County, whose Building Division covers only unincorporated areas. The city's Building Division is in the Community Services Building at 1600 First Street. Its directory listing gives (707) 257-9540 (a city document gives (707) 257-9530), and the inspection line is (707) 257-1063. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Thursday. The city's permits page lists work that is exempt from a permit. Doors, garage doors and openers are not on that list, but the page does not say they need a permit either, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the Building Division, and see cityofnapa.org.
Hillsides and fire zones. We could not verify at parcel level whether your address is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and we found no historic district rules. If you live in the hills or in an older downtown building, ask the city before the work.

Napa garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Napa?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Napa (ZIP 94558 and 94559) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Napa?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Napa?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Napa?
Napa homes use ZIP codes 94558 and 94559, according to zip-codes.com. ZIP code 94581 is for PO boxes only. ZIP areas can reach past the city limits, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it. We also serve nearby American Canyon, Yountville and Vallejo.
Does a garage door replacement in Napa need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Napa. The city's permits page lists exempt work and does not name garage doors or openers either way. Call the City of Napa Building Division to ask whether your job needs a permit.
Should I check my garage door after an earthquake in Napa?
As general advice, yes. Shaking can shift tracks, springs, brackets and the opener. Look for a door that sits crooked, cables off their drums or new gaps. If anything looks wrong, do not run the door, and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Napa?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
