What customers say

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

One of the state's largest cities, built mostly from the 1980s to the 2000s
According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, Naperville has about 58,188 housing units with a median year built of 1991. About 25 percent were built in the 1980s, 24 percent in the 1990s and 16 percent in the 2000s, and only about 23 percent date from before 1980. Doors, springs and openers from the 1980s and 1990s are now 25 to 40 years old, which is when original springs and opener gears often wear out.
About 62 percent of the city's homes are single-family detached houses, about 14 percent are attached homes and about 20 percent are in buildings of five or more units, and about 76 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, according to the same survey. Wikipedia says Naperville was among the nation's fastest-growing communities in the 1990s and describes a historic district of 573 buildings on the older east side. We could not verify any named master-planned or association-governed neighborhood, so ask your association or property manager before you change a door.

What Naperville weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia describes Naperville as having cold, snowy winters and hot summers, with mean daily highs from about 30 degrees in January to 83 in July, about 38 inches of precipitation a year and a record low of minus 29 degrees. Cold stiffens grease and weatherstripping, loads the opener and can break a spring that has many cycles on it.
On June 20, 2021 an EF3 tornado crossed south and south-eastern Naperville into Woodridge, according to Wikipedia, with winds estimated at 140 miles per hour. About 900 structures were damaged, and dozens of homes in one subdivision lost part or all of their roof cover. A garage door is the largest opening in the front of a house, so wind damage often shows up as bent panels or tracks. Chicago fell to minus 23 degrees on January 30, 2019 in the polar vortex, according to Wikipedia. On August 10, 2020 the derecho sent gusts of 62 miles per hour through O'Hare, and news reports put tens of thousands of suburban customers without power. We could not verify Naperville-only numbers for the last two events.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look for dents, a bowed panel or a track pulled from the wall before you use the opener.
- Check panels and tracks after a storm
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Naperville
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Naperville is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Naperville. Building Permits & Inspections is at 400 S. Eagle Street, the phone is 630-420-6100 (option 2 for code questions) and the city's website is naperville.il.us. The city's Building Permits page says residents must get the permits they need before work and lists new buildings, additions, remodeling, decks, patios, fences and pools, and it says some roofing and siding replacements on single-family homes need no permit. It does not name garage doors, exterior doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Call the department before the work. The page does not describe a city contractor registration for garage door companies, and we could not confirm one.
State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions has a roofing contractor category but no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state garage door contractor license. The Illinois Attorney General's home repair page says contractors should give you the Home Repair Consumer Rights document on jobs valued at $1,000 or more and describes a written contract that names the contractor and lists the work, dates, total cost and payment schedule. It also gives you 3 business days to cancel a contract you signed at home (15 business days if you are over 65).

Naperville garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Naperville?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Naperville (ZIP 60540) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Naperville?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Naperville?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Naperville?
Naperville's street ZIP codes are 60540, 60563, 60564 and 60565, and 60566 and 60567 are for PO boxes. Call us if your address is near Aurora, Plainfield, Lisle or Bolingbrook and you are not sure we reach it.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Naperville?
The city's permit page lists new buildings, additions, remodeling, decks, patios, fences and pools, but it does not name garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm the rule. Call Building Permits & Inspections at 630-420-6100 before the work. We explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can storm wind damage a garage door in Naperville?
Yes. An EF3 tornado crossed south and south-eastern Naperville on June 20, 2021, according to Wikipedia, and storm wind can bend panels or pull tracks from the wall. If your door shakes, jams or sits crooked after a storm, stop using the opener and call us.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
