Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review

Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Springfield homes

A capital city built out in the 1970s, with a core of houses from before 1940

According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, Springfield has about 57,424 housing units with a median year built of 1972. The 1970s are the biggest decade at about 19 percent, about 18 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, about 34 percent before 1960, and about 13 percent in 2000 or later. A door that is original to a 1970s home is now about 50 years old, which is the age when springs, cables and chain-drive openers have usually worn out or been replaced once.

About 65 percent of the city's homes are single-family detached houses, about 8 percent are attached, about 17 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 3 percent are mobile homes; about 64 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The Census puts the median value of an owner-occupied home at $162,100. Wikipedia lists at least twenty designated neighborhoods, among them Old Aristocracy Hill, Enos Park, Westchester and Harvard Park. We could not verify any homeowners' association rules, so ask yours before you change a door.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What Springfield weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia's Springfield article gives 1991-2020 normals for Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport: a January average high of 35.9 degrees and low of 19.9, a July average high of 86.8 and low of 66.2, about 38 inches of precipitation and about 22 inches of snow a year. Cold stiffens grease and weatherstripping, loads the opener and can break a spring that has many cycles on it.

Wikipedia says two F2 tornadoes hit Springfield on March 12, 2006, injuring 24 people and causing about $150 million in damage. NPR Illinois reported that the June 29, 2023 derecho brought a 61 mph gust to Capital Airport, left 24,000 City Water, Light and Power customers without electricity the next morning and led the city to declare a state of emergency. In a long outage, know where your manual release is.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Before a hard freeze, clear ice from the bottom seal so the door does not freeze to the slab.

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Springfield

Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.

HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.

City permits. Springfield is an incorporated city with its own government. The Office of Public Works is at 300 South 7th Street, phone 217-789-2255, public.works@springfield.il.us, on springfield.il.us. Its permits and forms page lists a building permit application, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permit applications, and notices on detached garages and roofing work. It has no entry for garage doors, doors or windows, so we could not confirm whether a replacement door or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the department before the work. The page lists electrical and mechanical contractor registrations but no general contractor registration, and we could not confirm whether garage door work is covered. The city's Historic Sites Commission keeps a registry of landmarks, including the Lincoln Home, so check it if your house is a designated site.

State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions has no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state garage door contractor license. The Illinois Attorney General's home repair page says a contractor should hand over the Home Repair Consumer Rights document for work valued at $1,000 or more, and that a contract signed at your home can be canceled within three business days.

FAQ

Springfield garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Springfield?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Springfield (ZIP 62704) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Springfield?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Springfield?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Springfield, Illinois?

Springfield's standard ZIP codes are 62701, 62702, 62703, 62704, 62707, 62711 and 62712, according to ZIP directories; several other codes belong to state offices or PO boxes. Call us if your address is near Chatham, Sherman or Leland Grove and you are not sure we reach it.

Do you service older garage doors in Springfield, Illinois?

Yes. About a third of Springfield's homes were built before 1960 and about 19 percent in the 1970s, according to Census estimates, and the doors, springs, tracks and openers on them are often worn or already replaced once. We weigh and balance the door and explain what we find before we quote.

Do you repair garage doors after a storm in Springfield, Illinois?

Yes. Strong straight-line wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame, and a falling limb can dent panels. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
