A river city of single-family houses beside many two- to four-family buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Haverhill has about 29,200 housing units and about 27,300 households, and the median owner-occupied home is worth about $521,100. Around 38 percent of units are single-family detached houses, roughly 28 percent are in buildings of two to four units and about 65 percent of households own their home. The median home was built in 1967, so many garage doors and openers are original.
Wikipedia says Haverhill was settled in 1640 and became a city in 1870, and that Bradford, across the Merrimack River, joined it on January 1, 1897. It names the Main Street Historic District, the historic district of Rocks Village and Victorian mansions in the Highlands beside downtown. We could not verify whether any of them has rules for garage doors, so ask the city before you change a door in one.
Tell us your street and whether the door belongs to a house or a multi-family building, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

What Haverhill weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Haverhill, from NOAA 1991-2020 normals, gives a January mean daily high of 34.9 degrees and low of 16.2, a July mean high of 82.4, about 49.6 inches of precipitation and about 57.8 inches of snow a year. The record low is minus 21 degrees. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping.
Snow and ice build up on the bottom seal, and road salt eats at tracks, hinges and spring hardware. According to news summaries, the Merrimack River rose more than 8 feet above flood stage on May 15, 2006; water and silt around a door base are hard on seals and hardware. If the power fails the opener cannot lift the door, so find the manual release before the storm.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.
- Lubricate rollers and hinges before winter

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Haverhill
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Haverhill's Inspectional Services Department is in City Hall, Room 214, 4 Summer Street, phone 978-374-2338, and City Hall is open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 4:00. The department page links an online permits portal and a fee schedule and does not mention doors or garage doors. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so call before the work or visit haverhillma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit, but it does not mention garage doors, so the answer from the city is the one that counts.

Haverhill garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Haverhill?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Haverhill (ZIP 01830) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Haverhill?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Haverhill?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Haverhill?
Haverhill has three street ZIP codes, 01830, 01832 and 01835, and we serve all three. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Haverhill require a permit to replace a garage door?
Haverhill's Inspectional Services page does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the department at 978-374-2338 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors in Bradford?
Yes. Bradford is the part of Haverhill across the Merrimack River, and we serve it the same as the rest of the city. Tell us your street and we confirm the visit.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
