A mill town on a big lake, with single-family houses beside two- to four-unit buildings
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Webster has about 8,200 housing units and about 7,700 households, and the median owner-occupied home is worth about $361,500. About 53 percent of units are single-family detached houses and roughly 31 percent are in buildings of two to four units, while about 60 percent of households own their home. The median home was built in 1962, so many doors and openers are original.
Wikipedia says Webster was settled in 1713, incorporated in 1832 and named by textile industrialist Samuel Slater for his friend Daniel Webster. It names Lake Chaubunagungamaug, also called Webster Lake, as the third-largest lake in Massachusetts, with a 45-character name often called the longest place name in the United States. Indian Ranch, a summer concert venue on the lake, and St. Joseph Basilica are also named.

My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

What Webster weather does to a garage door
Webster has no weather table of its own that we could verify, so these are figures from Worcester, about 12 miles north. Wikipedia's Worcester climate box uses Worcester Regional Airport: 1991-2020 normals show a January mean high near 32 degrees and mean low near 17, a July mean high near 80, about 48 inches of precipitation and between about 64 and 73 inches of snow a year, depending on which figure on the page you read. Webster sits much lower, at about 460 feet, so its own numbers may differ. Cold stiffens springs, cables and weatherstripping.
Snow and ice build up on the bottom seal, and road salt eats at tracks, hinges and spring hardware. If the power fails the opener cannot lift the door, so find the manual release before the storm.
Before winter, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a snowfall, clear the ice from the bottom of the door before you run the opener.

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Webster
Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
Town permits. Webster's Building Department is at 350 Main Street, Lower Level, phone 508-949-3800 extension 4005, open Monday 8 am to 7 pm, Tuesday to Thursday 8 am to 4 pm and Friday 8:30 am to noon. The department page lists the Building Commissioner and the plumbing, gas and electrical inspectors and does not mention doors or garage doors. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, so call before the work or visit webster-ma.gov.
State rules. Massachusetts General Laws chapter 142A covers residential contracting (repair, alteration, renovation and improvement) on existing owner-occupied buildings of one to four units and bars contractors from working without a registration certificate. The state building code lists work that needs no building permit, but it does not mention garage doors, so the answer from the town is the one that counts.

Webster garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Webster?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Webster (ZIP 01570) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (617) 644-5527, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Webster?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Webster?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Webster?
Webster has one street ZIP code, 01570. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does Webster require a permit to replace a garage door?
Webster's Building Department page does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm a rule. Call the department at 508-949-3800 extension 4005 before a replacement, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.
Do you repair garage doors on multi-family buildings in Webster?
Yes. The Census survey puts roughly 31 percent of Webster's housing units in buildings of two to four units, and we repair doors and openers on them as on any house. Tell us which unit the door belongs to and we plan the visit around it.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
