Quick answers

How much does a garage door spring cost to replace in Massachusetts?

A torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450, heavy-duty springs are $350 to $900 and one torsion spring is $180 to $300. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

How much do extension springs cost?

Extension springs are $150 to $300 a pair, depending on the spring length and the safety cables.

Should I replace one spring or both?

We usually replace both. The second spring is the same age as the first, so it is likely to fail soon after.

How long does a garage door spring last?

Garaga says a standard torsion spring should last around 10,000 cycles and gives an average of about five to seven years. Use and rust change that.

Why both springs are usually replaced

Most two-car doors have two torsion springs on the same shaft. They are installed together and wear together, so when one breaks the other is close behind. Replacing a single spring costs less today, and a second visit costs more later, which is why we usually replace both.

A pair also keeps the door balanced. Unequal springs can make the door lean or lift unevenly.

Cycle rating: the number that changes the price

A cycle is one full opening and closing. Garaga says a standard torsion spring should last around 10,000 cycles and estimates an average of five to seven years, with the exact life depending on use. Rust and cold weather can also affect a spring.

A higher rating lasts longer and costs more. A door used many times a day, such as a family with several drivers, may reach 10,000 cycles sooner than a rarely used door. Ask for the cycle rating on the quote, and see garage door springs in a cold snap for how wear shows up.

Torsion or extension springs?

Torsion springs

  • Mounted on a shaft above the door
  • Common on newer and heavier doors
  • Lift the door smoothly
  • Priced as a pair or singly

Extension springs

  • Run along the sides of the door
  • Common on lighter, older doors
  • Use safety cables to contain a break
  • Priced as a pair

Both store a lot of force and neither is a repair to try yourself. Garaga warns that a broken spring can let the door fall rapidly and advises a professional.

What a quote should list

  • Torsion or extension, and the spring size and wire gauge
  • The cycle rating of the springs
  • Whether one spring or both are replaced
  • Cables, drums and bearings that are replaced or checked
  • Labor, and a written total before work starts

The City of Boston Consumer Affairs page says a written contract is required for work costing 1,000 dollars or more, and recommends one for every job. It should list the work, the materials, the price and the dates.

Signs the springs need replacing

A loud bang, a gap in the coils, a door that will not lift or feels very heavy, or an opener that strains are all signs. Stop using the door and do not wind or remove a spring. For other repair prices, see garage door repair cost.
