A new garage door costs about $1,400 to $2,400 for a plain steel door and $1,800 to $3,600 for an insulated steel door, installed, for a standard 16x7 size. Carriage, wood and glass doors cost more. The final price depends on size, insulation, windows, color and hardware, and we confirm it after we see your door.

What moves the price up or down
Size is the first factor. A single door costs less than a double. A custom size or special order adds 20% to 40% and the lead time is 4 to 8 weeks.
- Insulation: an insulated door costs more than a plain steel door.
- Windows: more glass, or insulated glass, adds $400 to $1,200.
- Color: a custom powder coat, anodized finish or stain adds $300 to $1,200.
- Style: carriage, wood and modern doors cost more than a flat-panel steel door.
- Opening work: damaged framing or a worn header adds time and parts.

Reading an insulation rating
Brochures quote either an R-value or a U-factor, and they are not the same thing. DASMA, the garage door trade association, explains that a U-factor comes from testing the whole installed door, while an R-value is calculated for a single section. It says the two are not comparable and are not reciprocals of each other for garage doors.
For a fair comparison, ask each seller for the same kind of number on the same door. A lower U-factor means less heat passes through. Do not set one door's R-value against another door's U-factor. See insulated garage doors for Massachusetts winters for more on choosing.
What a quote should list
A clear quote names every part of the job so two offers can be compared line by line.
- Door model, size, panel style and color
- Insulation type and the rating, with the kind of rating named
- Window style, glass type and how many sections have it
- Springs, track, hinges and rollers, new or reused
- Removal and disposal of the old door
- Opener work, if any, and new sensors
- Lead time and the payment terms
Permits and approvals
A town building department can require a permit for a door replacement. One Massachusetts town's guide lists window or exterior door replacement among the work that needs a permit, and it says ordinary repairs that do not affect the structure or its systems do not. Each town sets its own practice, so check with your building department before you order.
Homes in a local historic district or a condominium may need approval first. See historic districts and carriage-style doors and HOA, condo and town rules.
Repair or replace first?
If the door is a few years old and only a spring, cable or roller failed, a repair is usually cheaper than a new door. A door with several bent sections, a worn track or a discontinued style is a better case for replacement. Read repair or replace and see garage door repair before you decide.

Questions people ask
How much does a new garage door cost in Massachusetts?
Our ranges run from $1,400 to $2,400 for a plain steel 16x7 door up to $4,500 to $9,000 for a full-view aluminum and glass door, installed. We confirm the final price after we see the door.
How much do garage door installers typically cost?
Installation is part of the installed price ranges above. If you only need an opener put in, labor alone runs $150 to $450 depending on the opener type.
How long does it take to install a new garage door?
A standard replacement is usually a single visit once the door arrives. Stock doors are quicker to get, and a custom size or special order has a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks.
Do I need a permit for a new garage door?
It depends on your town. Some building departments treat a door replacement as work that needs a permit, so ask yours before you order.
