Repair or Replace a Garage Door?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

Repair a door when the damage is one part, such as a spring, cable, roller or sensor, and the panels and track are sound. Replace it when several panels are damaged, the door is worn out, or repeated repairs are adding up. A technician can tell you which applies after seeing the door.

The short rule

A garage door is a set of parts on a moving frame. Most of those parts are made to be replaced: springs, cables, rollers, hinges, seals and sensors. If the panels and the track are in good shape, fixing the one part that failed is usually the sensible choice.

Replacing the whole door makes sense when the panels themselves are the problem, when the door is badly worn, or when you want a different look, better insulation or a quieter door.

Repair or replace: side by side

Repair makes sense when

  • One part failed, such as a spring, cable, roller or sensor
  • The panels are straight and the door is not rotting or rusting through
  • The track and frame are sound
  • The door still looks the way you want

Replace makes sense when

  • Several panels are dented, cracked or rotted
  • Parts are hard to find for an old door
  • You keep paying for repairs on the same door
  • You want better insulation, a new look or a quieter door

What a repair costs

These are Emil Garage Doors' approved ranges. A torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door runs $250 to $450. A lift cable replacement, pair, runs $175 to $350. Off-track door repair runs $175 to $450. The final price is confirmed after we see the door, because door weight, size and hardware change it.

Garaga says torsion springs are meant to last around 10,000 cycles, about five to seven years at typical use. A spring that wears out is a normal repair, not a sign the whole door is finished.

What a new door costs

An insulated steel garage door, 16x7, short panel, runs $1,800 to $3,400, and long panel $1,800 to $3,600, depending on insulation, windows and color. Carriage house doors, wood doors and full-view glass doors cost more. The quote should list the door, the hardware, the installation and the removal of the old door.

Decision bullets

  • One spring or cable broke and the door looked fine before: repair
  • A single dented panel on a door you like: ask whether the panel is available, and repair if it is
  • The door is crooked, bent at several sections or hard to balance: replace
  • The door has rot or rust through the panels: replace
  • You are adding an opener and the door is already worn: ask about replacing both

Opener: repair or replace

The same logic works for an opener. A failed remote, sensor or logic part is a repair. An opener that is old, noisy or no longer works with new remotes may not be worth fixing. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that openers made on or after January 1, 1993 must have an external entrapment protection device such as an electric eye, or a constant-contact button, and urges owners to test the reversing feature monthly. If yours fails the test or lacks the safety eyes, replace it. See opener repair for what we check.

The short verdict

Fix one broken part, replace a door that is failing everywhere. If you are unsure, have the door looked at before you spend money. A good technician will say so when a repair is not worth it. Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair of one part costs less than a new door. If several parts are failing or the panels are damaged, repeated repairs can add up to more than a new door.

When should I replace my garage door?

Replace it when several panels are damaged, the door is worn out, parts are hard to find, or you want better insulation or a new look.

Is it better to repair or replace a garage door opener?

Repair an opener when one part such as a sensor or remote has failed. Replace it when it is old, noisy, or fails the reversing test.

Do garage door springs last forever?

No. Garaga says torsion springs should last around 10,000 cycles, or about five to seven years at typical use, so replacing a spring is a normal repair.
