What changes the price
The problem rarely arrives alone. A broken spring can come with a damaged cable or a bent section, and an off-track door may need new rollers. The usual factors are the door's weight and size, the hardware that is worn, whether a part is no longer made and how many parts need replacing at once.
A heavy, insulated or wood door uses stronger springs and costs more to balance than a light single-layer door. Access matters too: a cluttered garage or a door above a finished room takes more time.
What a quote should list
- Each part and what it costs, not a single total
- The labor, and whether a second visit is possible
- Whether both springs or both cables are replaced
- The cycle rating of any spring, since a higher rating lasts longer
- Who is responsible if the repair does not hold, in writing
Garaga says a standard torsion spring should last around 10,000 cycles, so ask what rating is quoted.
Written contracts and Massachusetts rules
The City of Boston Consumer Affairs page says you must have a written contract when the work costs 1,000 dollars or more, and recommends one for any home improvement job. It says the contract should include a detailed description of the work and materials, the total price, a payment schedule and the start and completion dates, plus the signatures of all parties.
The same page says most contractors doing more than 1,000 dollars of work on an owner-occupied home of one to four families must be registered, and points to contractorhub.mass.gov for a lookup. Whether a particular job falls under that rule is for you to check with the state.
Repair or replace the door?
A repair is usually cheaper if the door is sound. A new door makes sense when several sections are creased, parts are discontinued or repairs keep coming back. See repair or replace a garage door and new garage doors for what that involves.

How to keep costs down
- Stop using a door that is heavy, crooked or off track, since forcing it adds damage.
- Photograph the problem and note any noise before you call.
- Ask for the inspection when you have a cluster of small symptoms.
- Replace springs in pairs, because the second spring is the same age.
- Get the quote in writing before the work starts.
