Areas are described by their landmarks, from local sources. Call if yours is not listed.
| Part of Abilene | What is there | What we often see on garage doors |
|---|---|---|
| North Abilene | Hardin-Simmons University and the streets around it | Older homes where parts may be original |
| Northeast Abilene | Abilene Christian University and the SH 351 and I-20 growth area | Mixed ages and door sizes |
| Southeast Abilene | The Abilene Zoo, Abilene Regional Airport and Loop 322 | Mixed ages; newer doors along Oldham Lane |

Abilene's standard ZIP codes are 79601, 79602, 79603, 79605, 79606 and 79607. The three university ZIP codes and the PO-box codes are not street addresses.

A city of 1970s houses with newer edges
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 one-year American Community Survey, Abilene has about 55,160 housing units. About 70 percent are single-family detached houses and about 58 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1974, so many original garage doors, tracks and openers are now 50 years old or close to it.
Wikipedia names the southwest (Southwest Drive and Buffalo Gap Road), the southeast (Loop 322, Oldham Lane and Maple Street) and the northeast near SH 351 and I-20 as the growth areas. Newer doors in those parts of town are usually a different size and style from the originals in the older neighborhoods, so we measure before we order anything.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What Abilene weather does to a garage door
At Abilene Regional Airport, the 1991-2020 normals give a July mean high of 96.4 degrees and a January mean low of 33.7, with about 25 inches of precipitation and 3.7 inches of snow a year. The record high is 113 degrees. Long hot spells wear opener motors and weatherstripping, and freezing nights stiffen lubricant on rollers and hinges.
Hail is the bigger risk. According to a weather-history summary, the June 12, 2014 hailstorm caused more than $400 million in insurance losses on vehicles, homes and commercial property. A local TV report said Taylor County ranked first in Texas for hail and wind insurance claims in 2011, and a 2023 storm-report site describes straight-line winds of about 70 mph near Buffalo Gap that bent and imploded garage doors.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After hail or a wind storm, look for dented panels and bent track sections before you run the opener.
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Check panels and tracks after hail or wind
- Test the safety reverse twice a year

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Abilene is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Abilene. Building Inspections is at 555 Walnut Street (northeast entrance of City Hall), phone (325) 676-6273, and permits go through the city's MyGov portal at abilenetx.gov. The city says a permit is required for alterations and repairs to buildings and for electrical, mechanical, plumbing or gas work, and that work without a required permit can bring a citation or a stop-work order. Garage doors and openers are not named, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Call Building Inspections before the work.
Texas rules. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says that installing only garage door openers or gate operators, and the remotes, keypads and wall buttons that only activate them, needs no DPS license, but a license is required when the operator is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes. We could not verify a statewide license rule for garage door repair itself.

Abilene garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Abilene?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Abilene (ZIP 79601) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Abilene?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Abilene?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Abilene?
Abilene's standard ZIP codes are 79601, 79602, 79603, 79605, 79606 and 79607. 79604 and 79608 are PO-box codes, and 79697, 79698 and 79699 belong to McMurry, Hardin-Simmons and Abilene Christian universities. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Abilene?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. The city requires permits for repairs and alterations to buildings, but its pages do not name garage doors. Call Abilene Building Inspections at (325) 676-6273 before a full replacement.
Do you repair garage doors after hail in Abilene?
Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
