Short answer

If the wall button works but the remote does not, start with the remote battery. Then move closer, check for LED bulb interference, and reprogram the remote with a quick press of the opener's Learn button. A dim keypad usually needs a fresh 9V alkaline battery. If the wall button also fails, the problem is not the remote.

What the symptom tells you

Start with what still works. If the wall button runs the door, the opener, the springs and the door are likely fine and the fault is in the remote, the keypad or the signal between them.

What about heat?

Many people blame a hot garage or a hot car for a dead remote. The manufacturer pages we read for this guide give no heat limit for remotes or keypads, so we cannot say heat is the cause. Check the manual for your remote for any temperature limit. If the problem only comes in the afternoon, note that and tell the technician.

Check these in order

  1. Try the wall button

If it runs the door, the opener is working. If it does not, stop here and see opener repair.

  2. Replace the remote battery

Check that the battery sits the right way round. Chamberlain support lists the battery as the first thing to replace.

  3. Move closer and check bulbs

For poor range, stand closer to the opener. Chamberlain also names LED light bulbs in the opener as a source of interference.

  4. Reprogram the remote

Press and immediately release the Learn button. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.

  5. Fix the keypad

A dim or silent keypad needs a new 9V alkaline battery, then re-enter your PIN.

Do not hold the Learn button

Chamberlain says holding the Learn button down for even a few seconds can erase the remotes already programmed. Press and release it. Clear the area first, because the door can move while you program.

Why a second remote will not work

Chamberlain and LiftMaster give four common reasons: the remote does not suit your opener, the Learn button was held too long, the two remotes use different technologies, or a remote has reverted to an older code type. Billion code and Security+ remotes cannot be programmed together on one opener. Use the maker's compatibility tool before you buy a new remote.

If you cannot sort it out, a technician can match the remote to the opener. See remotes and parts.

When to call a technician

Call if a new battery and a clean reprogram do not help, if the wall button is dead as well, or if the door moves unevenly or slams. LiftMaster advises contacting an authorized dealer when troubleshooting does not solve the problem. Do not work on the springs or cables to fix an opener problem.

Questions people ask

Why does my garage door open with the wall button but not the remote?

The most common causes are a weak remote battery, lost programming or a remote that does not suit the opener. Replace the battery first, then reprogram.

Why did my garage door remote stop working?

A dead battery is the first thing to check. Radio interference from LED bulbs or lost programming are the next causes.

Does heat stop a garage door remote working?

We found no manufacturer heat limit for remotes in the pages we read, so we cannot say it does. Check your remote's manual for any temperature limit.

How do I fix a dead keypad?

Replace the battery with a 9V alkaline battery, make sure the cover is secure, then test it and re-enter your PIN.
