Hail, tornado risk and Texas heat

What Gatesville weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia describes a humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and short mild winters. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Gatesville station give about 37 inches of precipitation a year and a record high of 112 degrees, with a record low of minus 8. Average snowfall is just 0.2 inch, so heat and storms matter more than snow for a garage door.

A Coryell County tornado rated EF-1 by the National Weather Service began about 9 miles southwest of Gatesville and damaged trees and homes, according to KCEN. A third-party storm-report listing shows 1.75-inch hail in Gatesville in June 2023. Hail dents steel panels and strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, put lubricant on the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look at the tracks and panels before you run the opener.

  • Check panels after hail
  • Look for bent tracks after storm wind
  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Gatesville homes

A county seat of older single-family houses

According to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, Gatesville has about 3,300 housing units and about 3,080 households. The headline population figure is much larger because it counts people in group quarters, so the housing counts are the better guide to how many homes there are. About 79 percent of the homes are single-family detached houses, about 64 percent are owner-occupied and the median year built is 1979, so many original doors and openers are more than 45 years old.

Gatesville is the seat of Coryell County. Wikipedia says the town was established in 1854 on land donated by Richard G. Grant and takes its name from Fort Gates, an Army post set up about 5 miles to the west in 1849. The Texas and St. Louis Railway reached the town in 1882. The Coryell County Museum holds a collection of about 10,000 pairs of spurs, and the Last Drive-In Picture Show is one of the oldest continuously running drive-ins in Texas. We found no source naming homeowner associations here.

Give us your street and say what the door is doing, whether it is slow, noisy, uneven or stuck. We balance each door before we choose new springs.

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Gatesville

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Gatesville is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Gatesville, not from Coryell County, whose permit line covers only unincorporated areas. The city's permit office is at 254-865-8951 (the city lists its address as 803 Main Street), with information at gatesvilletx.com. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or opener swap needs a permit, so call the permit office before the work.

Texas rules. We did not find a Texas state license specific to garage door repair. The Texas Department of Public Safety says installers of garage door and gate openers need no DPS license if they do nothing else regulated under Occupations Code Chapter 1702; a license is required if the opener is connected to an alarm or can monitor or log who comes and goes.

FAQ

Gatesville garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Gatesville?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Gatesville (ZIP 76528) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Gatesville?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Gatesville?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Gatesville?

Gatesville's street ZIP code is 76528. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you serve Gatesville and the Coryell County towns around it?

Yes. Besides Gatesville, we serve nearby places such as South Mountain, Oglesby, McGregor and Evant. Tell us your address when you call and we book the soonest visit.

Do you repair garage doors after hail or a tornado in Gatesville?

Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
