My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

What Harker Heights weather does to a garage door

Harker Heights has no weather station of its own. The nearest NOAA 1991-2020 normals, shown on Wikipedia for Killeen about 10 miles west, give a July mean high of 95.7 degrees, an August mean high of 96.6, a July record of 111, a January mean low of 36.1 and a record low of minus 1. Long hot summers wear springs, cables and seals, and a hard freeze stiffens lubricant on rollers and hinges.

Hail from pea to golf-ball size hit Killeen on April 12, 2022, according to the Killeen Daily Herald, and a storm-report archive logs a 1-inch hail report near Harker Heights on May 12, 2024. Hail dents steel panels and window inserts. During the February 2021 winter storm, local news coverage said homes in Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove stayed dark, some for a day or longer, so know where your red manual release cord is.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a hail storm, look at the panels and track sections before you run the opener.

  • Look for dented panels after hail
  • Know where the manual release is
  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Harker Heights

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Harker Heights is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Harker Heights. City Hall is at 305 Millers Crossing, phone 254-953-5600, and the Building Official, Permits & Inspections office is at 254-953-5647. The city's permit pages list residential building permits, an application for building permits and an application for contractor registration, but they do not say when a permit is needed or mention garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or opener swap needs a permit, so call the office before the work or visit harkerheights.gov.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. The Texas Department of Public Safety says installing garage door or electronic gate openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is tied to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes.

FAQ

Harker Heights garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Harker Heights?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Harker Heights (ZIP 76548) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Harker Heights?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Harker Heights?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Harker Heights?

Harker Heights has one standard street ZIP code, 76548, which also lists Killeen as an accepted name. Some mail in the city carries a Killeen address. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you service garage doors in Killeen and Nolanville as well?

Yes. Harker Heights is bordered by Killeen on the west and Nolanville on the east. Give us your address when you call and we will confirm the visit.

Do you repair garage doors after hail in Harker Heights?

Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and loosen tracks and window inserts. We inspect the panels, track, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
