Repair when the door is straight and one part is worn, such as a spring, cable, roller or seal. Replace when several sections are damaged, the door is bent or no longer moves true, parts are no longer made, or the repair bills add up near the price of a new door. Ask for a written quote for both.
The question to ask first
Most garage door trouble comes from a worn part, not a worn-out door. Springs, cables, rollers and seals are made to be replaced. A door that is straight, balanced and in good shape can run for a long time with the right parts.
So begin with one question: is the door itself sound? If the panels are straight, the track is true and the door moves smoothly by hand when the opener is disconnected, repair is usually the sensible route.

Repair or replace at a glance
Repair usually makes sense when
- A spring or cable has broken
- Rollers, hinges or a seal are worn
- The door came off the track but the sections are not bent
- The opener works and passes its reversing test
Replace usually makes sense when
- Several sections are creased, cracked or rotted
- The door has been hit and no longer sits square
- A model is gone, so a panel will not match
- The door is single layer and the garage needs insulation or quiet
What repairs cost
These are our approved ranges. The final price is confirmed after we see the door, because weight, size and hardware change the job.
| Job | Price range | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door | $250 to $450 | Door weight and size |
| Lift cable replacement, pair | $175 to $350 | Door weight and cable length |
| Off-track door repair | $175 to $450 | Bent tracks, damaged panels or rollers |
| Belt-drive opener with battery backup, installed | $550 to $900 | Horsepower, smart features, door size |
| Insulated steel door, short panel, 16x7 | $1,800 to $3,400 | Insulation, windows and color |
Ranges are approved prices, not a quote.

When repairs stop making sense
A repair makes less sense when it stacks on a door that is already failing. If you are buying a spring or cable this year and rollers and a seal the next, ask what the door still has in it. Several repairs near the price of a new insulated door is a sign to look at the new door.
Weight matters too. DASMA says an opener's force setting should never be used to make up for a door that is not balanced or does not move smoothly, and that the door must be balanced and properly reinforced before an opener is installed. A heavy, sagging door is a door problem, not an opener problem.
Quick answers
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
Repairing one worn part is usually cheaper. Replacing the door costs more up front but can make sense when several sections are damaged or repairs keep stacking up.
When should I replace my garage door?
Consider a new door when sections are creased or cracked, the door no longer sits square, a matching panel is not available, or you need insulation and a quieter door.
Can I replace just the opener and keep my door?
Yes, if the door is balanced and in good shape. A door that is out of balance will strain even a new opener.
Is a broken spring a reason to replace the door?
Not by itself. A broken spring is a repair on an otherwise sound door. Replace the door only if the door itself is damaged or worn out.
The opener on its own
An opener is a separate decision from the door. A new opener can go on an old door that is in good shape, and a new door can keep a working opener. Ask your technician to check the door's balance first, because a door that fights the opener will wear it out early.
DASMA says the opener's reversing system should be tested monthly, or after any adjustment or repair, by laying a 2x4 flat on the floor under the door. If the door does not reverse, stop using the opener and call for service. See opener installation cost in Texas.
Safety comes before cost
Springs and cables hold the full weight of the door under tension. Do not adjust, wind or remove them yourself, and do not run the opener on a heavy, crooked or off-track door. A technician should handle the work. See spring repair and cable repair.
