Belt drive or wall mount

A belt-drive opener sits on the ceiling and moves the door along a rail. A jackshaft-type opener, as DASMA defines it, is mounted on the wall or ceiling and turns the torsion shaft directly. Wall-mount units free the ceiling and suit garages with little headroom, but they need more wiring and more time, which is why they cost more.

Both can have smart features and battery backup. Ask which features are included in the price and which need an extra module.

A new opener will not fix a broken spring

DASMA says safe operation depends on a balanced door, a working operator and working entrapment protection. An opener cannot make up for a broken spring or a damaged cable, and it will strain if it tries. If the door is heavy, crooked or will not stay up when you lift it by hand, fix the door first. See spring replacement cost and opener repair.

What the install should include

  1. Outlet within reach

DASMA's checklist asks for an electrical outlet within 3 feet of the opener. If there is none, an electrician should add one.

  2. Red release handle

UL 325 requires a red manual release handle that is easy to reach, no more than six feet above the floor.

  3. Wall button

At least one working wall button, in clear view of the door and mounted at least five feet above the floor so children cannot reach it.

  4. Photo eyes

The beams must be no higher than six inches above the floor.

  5. Reversal tests

The door must reverse when you wave an object through the beam and when it touches a 1-1/2 inch object, such as a 2x4 laid flat, on the floor.

Quick answers

How much does garage door opener installation cost?

A belt-drive opener with battery backup costs $550 to $900 installed, and a wall-mount opener costs $900 to $1,400 installed. Labor alone costs $150 to $450.

How much does it cost to install a garage door opener I already own?

Installation labor alone costs $150 to $450. Wall-mount units take longer, so they sit at the higher end.

Does my garage need an outlet near the opener?

DASMA's consumer checklist asks for an outlet within 3 feet of the operator. If there is none, an electrician should add one.

Can a new opener lift a door with a broken spring?

It should not be asked to. DASMA says safe operation depends on a balanced door, so the spring needs to be fixed first.

Opener only or whole system

Labor-only installation fits when you already bought an opener and it matches your door. If you buy through us, the installed rows in the table cover the opener and the work. Either way, the quote should say which opener model it is, what remotes and keypads come with it and whether old sensors and wiring are reused or replaced.

What a quote should list

  • Opener brand, model, drive type and horsepower
  • Battery backup and smart features, and whether they work with your phone
  • Remotes, keypad and wall button included
  • New sensors, brackets and wiring
  • Removal of the old opener
  • Any door repair found during the visit, listed on its own line
