Horizon City homes

A planned desert town of mostly single-family houses

According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Horizon City has about 7,300 housing units. About 91 percent are single-family detached houses, about 85 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and the median year built is 2004. That puts the original doors and openers on many homes at 20 years old or more, the age when springs, cables and opener circuits begin to give out.

Wikipedia says the town began in 1962 as a planned community of the Horizon Corporation, a land developer, and that only the part around Horizon Boulevard and Kenazo Street succeeded and became the core of the city. It was incorporated on October 22, 1988. Many lots east of the built-up area are still undeveloped, so the homes we see are mostly in the streets between Darrington Road and the east end of Horizon Boulevard.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

  • Original springs and openers on homes from about 2004
  • Wide two-car doors on single-family lots
  • Doors in newer streets that have only had their first service

Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

Desert wind, dust and sudden rain

What Horizon City weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia gives Horizon City an average annual temperature of 63.2 degrees and about 9 inches of rain a year, and lists the town at 4,026 feet. The town has no station of its own. At El Paso International Airport, about 14 miles northwest, the 1991-2020 normals show a July mean daily high of 95.8 degrees and a January mean daily low of 34.5. Summer heat dries rubber seals and tires springs, and a winter night below freezing can stiffen grease.

Wikipedia's El Paso article describes frequent dust and sand storms in spring, especially March to early May, with gusts over 75 mph. The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning for March 18, 2025, with west winds of 40 to 50 mph and gusts to 70 mph, and a Blowing Dust Advisory. On October 14, 2025, a flood advisory listed Horizon City among places that might see minor flooding. Wind loads a wide door and its opener rail, dust packs into tracks and rollers, and water can reach the bottom seal.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a dust storm, clear the track and the bottom seal before you run the opener.

  • Wipe dust out of tracks and rollers
  • Check the bottom seal after heavy rain
  • Know where the manual release is

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Horizon City

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Horizon City is its own town, so its rules come from the Town of Horizon City. Building Services is at Town Hall, 14999 Darrington Road, phone (915) 852-1046; inspections are scheduled at (915) 852-1875 and must be called in the day before by 4:00 PM. Town Hall is open Monday to Thursday and closed Friday. The town's site is horizoncity.org, where it lists residential building, electrical, mechanical and contractor forms and says it uses the 2009 International Residential Code. The page does not say when a permit is needed and does not mention garage doors, so we could not confirm whether replacing a door or an opener needs a permit. Call Building Services before the work.

Texas rules. We found no Texas statewide license for garage door contractors. A Texas Department of Public Safety page dated 2020 says installing garage door openers needs no DPS license unless the opener is connected to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes. We also could not confirm a wind-load rule or any homeowner association rules for Horizon City streets, so check your own deed restrictions before you choose a new door.

FAQ

Horizon City garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Horizon City?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Horizon City (ZIP 79928) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Horizon City?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Horizon City?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP code do you serve in Horizon City?

Horizon City's street ZIP code is 79928. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Horizon City?

We could not confirm that. The town's Building Services page lists its permit forms but does not mention garage doors or openers. Call Building Services at (915) 852-1046 before you order a new door.

Can wind and dust damage a garage door opener?

They can. Strong gusts push on wide doors and bend tracks, and fine dust packs into rollers, hinges and opener gears. We inspect the track, rollers and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
