Straight-line wind, hail and heat

What Terrell weather does to a garage door

Terrell has a humid subtropical climate. The Dallas Love Field 1991-2020 normals, the closest table we read, give a July mean daily high of 96.9 degrees and about 39 inches of precipitation a year, and Terrell is east of Dallas so its numbers may differ a little. Heat strains opener motors and springs, and a hard freeze stiffens seals.

CBS Texas reported winds of at least 60 mph on August 23, 2010 that blew part of the roof off a motel on US 80 on Terrell's west edge. Inforney reported major damage in Kaufman County, including a Terrell warehouse, from storms on May 28, 2024, and a hail-report site listed golf-ball hail about 3 miles from Terrell in March 2023. Wind bends tracks and hail dents steel panels.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a storm, look at the track and the panels before you run the opener.

  • Check tracks after high wind
  • Look for dented panels after hail

Terrell homes

A railroad town with a historic core and 1980s subdivisions

According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey, Terrell has about 6,200 housing units. About 70 percent are single-family detached houses, about 59 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and the median year built is 1984. Original doors and openers from the 1980s are commonly on a second set of springs or due for one.

Terrell grew as a railroad town starting in 1873, so the center has older homes and downtown buildings, including the First National Bank Building, the Carnegie Library and houses on Griffith Avenue that are on the National Register, according to Wikipedia's Kaufman County list. We could not verify what rules apply to garage doors in the older part of town or in any association, so ask the city and your association first.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review

"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review

It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Terrell

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Terrell is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Terrell. The city directory lists Building Inspections at 201 E. Nash Street, phone 972-551-6654, and the city site is terrelltx.gov. We could not read the city's permit pages, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement or an opener swap needs a permit, and the office details should be confirmed by phone. Ask Building Inspections before the work.

Texas rules. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says that installing only garage door openers or gate operators and their remotes, keypads and card readers does not need a DPS license, unless the operator is tied to an alarm system or can log who comes and goes. We could not confirm any separate statewide license for garage door repair.

FAQ

Terrell garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Terrell?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Terrell (ZIP 75160) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Terrell?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Terrell?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Terrell?

Terrell uses ZIP codes 75160 and 75161. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.

Do you service garage doors in Terrell's older neighborhoods?

Yes. The center of Terrell has older homes, and parts on an older door are often original. We inspect the track, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

Do you repair garage doors after hail or wind in Terrell?

Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and straight-line wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame. If your door shakes, scrapes or has come off the track, stop using the opener and call us.

Can a handyman fix a garage door?

A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
