★★★★★
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review

I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review

They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
★★★★★
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review

Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

Rose City neighborhoods from brick-street districts to golf communities

According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, Tyler has about 46,000 housing units. About 62 percent are single-family detached houses and about 55 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median year built is 1978, so many original garage doors and openers are now more than forty years old.

Wikipedia lists the Brick Streets Historic District, 29 blocks of mostly 1900s buildings, and the Charnwood Residential Historic District, which was listed on the National Register in 1999. Real-estate listings describe golf and gated sub-neighborhoods in Hollytree in south Tyler and the 500-acre Cascades development west of downtown, though we could not verify official gated status or any association rules. Ask your association or the city before you change a door.

Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

Hail, wind and long hot summers

What Tyler weather does to a garage door

Wikipedia's climate table for Tyler, based on NOAA 1991-2020 normals, gives a July mean daily high of 93.1 degrees, about 91 days a year above 90 and about 48 inches of precipitation. Months of heat stress opener motors and weatherstripping, and humid air and hot attics speed rust on springs and cables.

Wikipedia says spring and summer bring severe thunderstorms with hail, damaging wind and tornadoes. The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported an EF-0 tornado of about 80 mph crossing midtown Tyler on April 20, 2023, with canopy and roof damage and no injuries. Wikipedia also records a low of -6 degrees on February 16, 2021, so a hard freeze can happen even though winters are short.

Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. After a hail or wind storm, look at the track and panels before you run the opener.

  • Look for dented panels after hail
  • Check tracks after high wind
  • Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year

Rules to know

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Tyler

Safety reverse and sensors. A home garage door opener sold in the United States has to reverse the door on contact and have photo-eye sensors or an equivalent entrapment protection device, under the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission standard (16 CFR part 1211). A door that closes on an object, or an opener with dead sensors, needs repair before further use. See opener installation.

Associations. Check any HOA or historic district rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.

City permits. Tyler is its own city. Building Services and the Development Center are at 423 W. Ferguson Street, phone (903) 531-1151, and permits are submitted and tracked online. The city's residential checklist has a window and door replacement category but does not mention garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit. Call Building Services before the work or visit cityoftyler.org.

Historic areas. Tyler's code says an exterior feature of a building in a historic district overlay cannot be altered without a Certificate of Appropriateness. We could not verify whether the Charnwood and Brick Streets districts are local overlays or whether a garage door counts, so in a historic district check with the city first.

Texas rules. We did not find a state board page that requires a license for garage door work. A Texas Department of Public Safety page says installing only garage door openers or gate operators, with the wall buttons, remotes and keypads that simply activate them, needs no DPS license, but a license is required when the operator is tied to an alarm system or can record who comes and goes.

FAQ

Tyler garage door repair: questions we hear

Is there garage door repair near me in Tyler?

Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Tyler (ZIP 75701) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (214) 382-3772, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Tyler?

Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

What is the most common garage door repair in Tyler?

Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.

How much is a service call for a garage door?

Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.

Which ZIP codes do you serve in Tyler?

Tyler's street ZIP codes are 75701 through 75709. ZIPs 75706 and 75707 also carry the names Lindale and Chapel Hill, so give us your street address if you are outside the city proper. ZIPs 75710 to 75713 are PO boxes.

Do you service garage doors in Hollytree and the Cascades?

Yes. Both are planned or golf communities, and listings describe some gated sub-neighborhoods. Check your association's rules on door style and color before you choose a new door, and tell us when you call so we can plan the visit.

Can you work on garage doors in Tyler's historic districts?

Yes. In a historic district the city may want a Certificate of Appropriateness before exterior changes, so check with the city before replacing a door. Repairs to springs, cables and openers inside the garage are a separate matter; ask the city if you are unsure.

Do you repair hail and wind damage in Tyler?

Yes. Hail can dent steel panels and strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.

How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?

Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
