Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney · Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine · Google review

I have been using them for few years. They are professional, reliable (especially in emergencies (springs breaking)), customer service is always polite and helpful, and their prices cannot be beat!!Deborah · Google review
Doesn't get any better than this guy! I have recently purchased a condo with a broken garage door opener. It was missing some brackets. I called them, and Emil came out promptly the next morning. On time! He was able to run back to his shop and get the bracket I needed. It took him less than an hour to complete the entire project! My garage door works great now. I said a little thank you to Emil as I opened my garage door late last night and drove in my garage. I would definitely call him again if I needed anything done with my garage door. Highly recommend, plus he's just a super nice guy, which the process so much easier. Thanks Emil!Winston · Google review

A city of 1970s to 2000s houses beside a former Navy depot
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey (five-year estimates), Clearfield has about 12,000 housing units and a median year built of 1989. About 55 percent are single-family detached houses, roughly 18 percent are in buildings of five or more units and about 59 percent of homes are owner-occupied. Around 39 percent of the housing was built before 1980, so many original doors, springs and openers are now 40 years old or more.
The city grew around Hill Field, now Hill Air Force Base, which began construction in 1940, and around the Navy's Clearfield supply depot, which opened in 1943 and became the Freeport Center, according to Wikipedia. We could not confirm homeowner associations, building materials or a historic district, so ask your neighbors or the city if you are not sure what applies to your street.
Tell us your cross street, whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and whether you own or rent, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before we choose new springs.
- Original springs and openers on 1970s and 1980s homes
- Rental units and townhomes: the owner approves the work
- Older tracks and worn rollers

What your garage door is telling you in Clearfield
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The door is heavy and will not stay up | A spring has lost tension or broken | Replace the springs as a set and rebalance the door |
| The door jumped off its track | A bent track or a broken roller | Straighten or replace the track, replace rollers, reset the door |
| The opener runs but nothing moves | A stripped gear, broken spring or a disconnected door | Test the opener, repair or replace the failed part |
| The door closes crooked | A stretched or slipped cable | Replace the cable and level the door |
| The remote works only close to the door | A weak battery, receiver or antenna | Replace the battery and test the receiver |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.

What Clearfield weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia gives Clearfield about 20.75 inches of precipitation and about 24 inches of snow a year, with a record low of minus 26 and a record high of 108. For monthly figures, nearby Farmington's 1981-2010 normals (Wikipedia, station not named) show a January mean high of 38.1 degrees and low of 20.6, and a July mean high of 92.5. Cold like that stiffens rubber bottom seals, thickens lubricant and loads torsion springs and cables on frozen mornings.
Wind is the other test. The National Weather Service logged a 99 mph gust in nearby Farmington in the September 8, 2020 windstorm, according to KSL, and the Davis County school districts closed. We found no Clearfield gust figure or damage report for that storm. The December 1, 2011 Davis County windstorm reached about 102 mph in Centerville and left about 54,000 residences without power at its peak, according to Wikipedia, and Clearfield is not named there.
Before winter, wipe the bottom seal, lubricate the rollers and hinges and test the safety reverse. If wind knocks out your power, pull the red release cord and open the door by hand instead of forcing the opener.
- Check the bottom seal before it freezes to the slab
- Know where the manual release is for outages
- Look over tracks and panels after a windstorm

Opener safety, permits and design rules in Clearfield
Opener safety. Federal rules (the Consumer Product Safety Commission's standard for automatic residential garage door operators, 16 CFR part 1211) require openers made for homes to reverse the door when it meets an obstruction and to have a separate entrapment protection device, which on most openers is the pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor. If your opener ignores the sensors or does not reverse, stop using it and call us. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic district, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Clearfield is its own city, so permits come from Community Development at City Hall, 55 S State Street, phone 801-525-2701 for business licensing and building permit questions (clearfield.city). The city's page says it regulates construction through permits, that plans are reviewed for code compliance and that most repairs or alterations require a permit, but it does not name garage doors or openers. We could not confirm whether a garage door replacement needs a permit, so ask Community Development before the work.
State rules. Under Utah Code 58-55-305, repair or improvement work valued under $7,000 may be done without a contractor license, and on a job over $3,000 the person files a one-time affirmation with the Division of Professional Licensing that they carry public liability insurance. Electrical work on such a job must be done by an electrician or electrical contractor who holds the state electrical license. Utah rule R156-55a-301 lists garage doors in the scope of the S220 Carpentry and Flooring Contractor classification. You can check any contractor at dopl.utah.gov.

Clearfield garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Clearfield?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Clearfield (ZIP 84015) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (801) 980-3670, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Clearfield?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Clearfield?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Clearfield?
Clearfield's street ZIP code is 84015, according to zip-codes.com; 84016 and 84089 are listed as PO-box ZIP codes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do you repair garage doors near Hill Air Force Base and the Freeport Center?
Yes. Hill Air Force Base borders the east edge of Clearfield and the Freeport Center sits in the middle of the city. Call with your address and we confirm the visit window.
Do you repair garage doors after a windstorm in Clearfield?
Yes. Strong wind can bend a track, push a light door out of its frame or leave an opener without power. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so we do not recommend fixing them yourself.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
