How to Check a California Contractor License

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Safety

Short answer

Open the CSLB Check a License page at cslb.ca.gov, search by license number or business name, and confirm the license is active, lists a class that fits garage door work (C-61 / D28), and shows a bond and workers' compensation coverage or an exemption. A license number printed in an ad does not prove the license is valid.

What the CSLB check tells you

The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) runs a free online lookup that lets you verify a contractor license and check complaint disclosure. It is the quickest way to learn whether the company you are about to let into your garage may legally bid on your job.

CSLB warns that seeing a license number does not mean the license is valid, so the number in an ad is only the starting point. The check takes a few minutes, and you can do it from your phone.

Do it before you book

Get the company's legal name and license number on the phone, then check them while you are still comparing quotes. Under CSLB's rules, ads should carry the contractor's license number, including online ads and vehicle signs.

How to check a license in seven steps

1

Get the name and number

Ask for the legal business name and the CSLB license number. Write both down.

2

Open Check a License

Go to the CSLB Check a License page. The database is offline from Sunday at 8 p.m. until Monday at 6 a.m., so try again if it does not load.

3

Search

A license number has no letters and is up to 8 digits. If you only have a name, type the first 10 to 15 letters of the business name. You can also call (800) 321-CSLB.

4

Confirm the status

The record should say the license is current and active. CSLB says an inactive license holder may not bid or contract for work.

5

Read the classification

Garage door and gate work appears on CSLB records as C-61 / D28, Doors, Gates and Activating Devices. Ask the company which classification covers your job.

6

Check the bond and workers' compensation

The record lists the contractor's bond and either workers' compensation coverage or an exemption for a license holder with no employees. CSLB also suggests asking for a Certificate of Insurance.

7

Match the person to the record

Compare the business name and address on file with your quote. When the technician arrives, ask for the pocket license and a photo ID.

What to avoid

  • A license number that returns nothing, or belongs to a different business name
  • A status of inactive, expired or suspended
  • A classification that has nothing to do with doors or gates
  • A company that will not give a number, an address or a legal name
  • A salesperson who cannot show a Home Improvement Salesperson registration card, which CSLB says to request from sales staff

What the check does not tell you

A clean record is a good sign, not proof that the job will go well. CSLB says the 25,000 dollar contractor bond is often not enough to cover multiple complaints and does not assure the integrity or competence of a contractor.

So use the license check along with a written, itemized quote and sensible payment terms. CSLB advises getting at least three written bids on a larger project such as a new door. Our post on choosing a company and avoiding scams covers what to do next.

When no license is required

California exempts a small job from licensing if the total for labor, materials and all other items is under 1,000 dollars and the work needs no building permit, and a bigger job cannot be broken into pieces to dodge the rule. That is the law, not a safety rule. Springs, cables and brackets are technician work even when the bill is small: see can a handyman fix a garage door.
