Electric Gate Repair Cost: What Changes the Price

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Gates

Short answer

There is no single price for electric gate repair, because the cause decides the work: a dirty sensor, a worn control board, a failed motor and a sagging gate are very different jobs. We confirm the price in writing after we see the gate and before we start. Below is what moves the price and what a fair quote lists.

How much does an electric gate repair cost?

It depends on what failed. Prices you see online vary widely because they mix a quick sensor fix with a motor replacement on a damaged gate. A single average tells you very little about your gate.

We have not set a published price list for gate work, so we do not quote a number here. Instead, this page explains the factors. Use it to judge any quote, ours or someone else's.

What decides the price

The faultSensor, remote or keypad faults are small. A control board or motor is a larger partHigher for bigger parts
The gate itselfA sagging, bent or dragging gate needs mechanical work before the operator can be judgedCan add labor and parts
Safety devicesUL 325 calls for entrapment protection on residential operators, and warning signs on both sides of the gateMissing or failed devices must be fixed or added
Operator age and brandOlder or discontinued models can be hard to match with partsCan push the job toward replacement
Access and wiringBuried power or control wires, long runs, solar power or a hard-to-reach operator take longerMore labor

Myth: replacing the operator fixes any gate

Many gate faults are not in the operator. A dirty sensor, a dragging hinge, a bent track, a shifted limit or a worn wheel can all look like a bad motor. UL 325 says an operator should be installed only on a gate that moves freely in both directions, and that the clutch must not be overtightened to cover a damaged gate. A new operator on a stiff gate will fail again.

Myth: the shortest quote is the safest choice

A short quote with one line, such as "repair gate", hides what you are paying for. Compare quotes by what they include, not only the total. A quote that skips the sensors and the signs may leave a gate that moves but is not safe.

Quick answers

How much does automatic gate repair cost?

It depends on the fault, the gate's condition and the safety devices. We confirm a written price after we see the gate and before we start.

How much does it cost to service an electric gate?

Service price depends on the operator, how many parts are checked and whether the gate itself needs work. Ask what the visit includes before you book.

How much do gate repairs cost?

A small sensor or remote fault costs less than a new control board or motor, and a damaged gate adds labor. Compare quotes by what each includes.

Is it worth repairing an old electric gate operator?

Often yes if one part failed and the gate moves freely. If parts are hard to find or repairs repeat, replacement can make more sense.

What a good quote lists

  • What failed, in plain words, and how it was found
  • The parts to be replaced, with brand and model
  • Whether the sensors, signs and manual release are checked
  • Labor, the trip and any separate diagnosis fee
  • Whether the gate itself, such as hinges, wheels or track, is included
  • What warranty the parts carry, in writing

Repair or replace the operator?

Repair makes sense when one part has failed on a gate that otherwise moves freely. Replacement makes sense when the operator is old, parts are hard to find, or repeated repairs add up. Read electric gate repair for the kinds of faults we handle, and why a gate will not close if yours stops short.
