Common garage door repairs run from an $89 safety inspection to $175 to $450 for an off-track door, $175 to $350 for a pair of lift cables and $250 to $450 for a torsion spring pair. The price depends on the door, the part and the damage. We confirm the final amount after we see the door.
What common repairs cost
These are our approved prices for garage door repair. Each one is a range because the door weight, the parts and the damage change the work.
| Repair | Price | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| 12-point safety inspection | $89 | Springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener checked |
| Off-track door repair | $175 to $450 | Bent tracks, damaged panels or rollers |
| Rollers (set), sensors or tune-up | $150 to $350 | Number of rollers, sensor type and door size |
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door | $250 to $450 | Door weight and size |
| Lift cable replacement, pair | $175 to $350 | Door weight and cable length |

What changes the price
The same symptom can have different causes. A door that will not open might need a sensor realigned, a roller set, a cable or a spring. A technician has to look before pricing the job, which is why the inspection exists.
- The part: a spring costs more than a roller, and a heavy or oversized door needs a stronger spring.
- Damage around it: a door that came off the track can bend the track or the panel.
- Door size and weight: a double door with windows weighs more than a single.
- Extra parts found on the day: a worn drum or a bracket next to a failed cable.
- Whether the door should be repaired or replaced; see new garage doors when the door is old and worn.
What a good quote lists
The Arizona Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission give the same basic advice for any home repair. Get more than one written estimate, ask for a written contract and have every promise in writing. The FTC says an estimate should cover the work, the materials, the completion date and the price, and it warns against automatically choosing the lowest bidder.
- The exact parts: spring size, cable length, roller type and brand.
- Labor, and whether the price includes a safety check afterward.
- A note that both springs are replaced when one breaks.
- The date of the work and when payment is due.
Why you should not do spring and cable work yourself
DASMA calls springs arguably the most important and most dangerous part of the door. It says spring systems should be repaired only by trained professionals and cables replaced only by a trained technician. If a spring is broken or a cable has slipped, stop using the door and call. See spring repair and cable repair.
DASMA also advises replacing both springs on a two-spring door even if only one has broken, because the other is the same age and has done the same number of turns.
Quick answers
How much does it cost to repair a garage door?
Our approved ranges run from an $89 safety inspection to $175 to $450 for an off-track door and $250 to $450 for a torsion spring pair. We confirm the final price after we see the door.
How much does a garage door service call cost?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It checks the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener.
What should a repair quote include?
The exact parts, the labor, the date of the work and when payment is due, all in writing. The FTC says to get the details in writing and not to choose on cost alone.
Should I pay in full before the work?
No. The Arizona Attorney General says not to pay for the entire project before work begins and to limit any down payment to one-third of the total cost.
Deposits and payment
The Arizona Attorney General says not to pay for the whole project before work begins and not to pay more than one-third of the total cost as a down payment. The FTC says to make the final payment only when the work is finished and you are satisfied. For a small repair you pay when the work is done. For a new door with a lead time, expect a deposit and ask for it in writing.
Repair or replace?
Repair makes sense when
- One part failed: a spring, cable, roller or sensor
- The panels and track are straight
- The door is not very old or worn
- The cost is well under a new door
Replacement is worth pricing when
- Several sections are damaged or bent
- The door is worn and fails again
- You want better insulation or style
- Parts for the model are hard to get
