A standard torsion spring pair for a two-car door costs $250 to $450, heavy-duty torsion springs cost $350 to $900, a single torsion spring costs $180 to $300 and extension springs cost $150 to $300 a pair. Door weight sets the price. We usually replace both springs and confirm the final price after we see the door.
What spring replacement costs
These are our approved prices. A range is used because the right spring depends on the door's weight, its size and how many cycles it is rated for.
| Spring work | Price | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door (10,000 cycle) | $250 to $450 | Door weight and size |
| Heavy-duty torsion springs (25,000+ cycle, heavy, wood or oversized doors) | $350 to $900 | Door weight, spring wire size and cycle rating |
| One torsion spring | $180 to $300 | We usually replace both, because the second spring is the same age |
| Extension springs, pair | $150 to $300 | Spring length and safety cables |
Final price is confirmed after we see the door. Prices reviewed November 2026.

Why both springs get replaced
DASMA, the garage door trade association, says that if your door has two springs you should replace both, even if only one is broken. The other spring is the same age and has worked just as hard, so it is likely to go next.
That is why a single spring costs less than a pair but is not always the right job. If you pay for one spring now and the second breaks next month, you pay for another visit.
What sets the price
- Door weight: a heavier door needs a stronger spring. Wood, insulated and glass doors weigh more than a thin steel door.
- Door size: a double door needs a longer, stronger spring than a single.
- Cycle rating: a spring rated for more cycles lasts longer and costs more. The 10,000 and 25,000 figures in our price list are cycle ratings.
- Type: torsion springs sit above the door, extension springs run along the tracks and need safety cables.
- Parts found worn on the day, such as cables or drums; see cable repair.
Signs a spring has broken
| What you notice | What it likely means |
|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A spring or cable let go |
| The opener runs but the door barely lifts | The door is no longer balanced by its springs |
| The door feels heavy by hand | The spring is weak or broken |
| A visible gap in the coil | A broken torsion spring |
A technician confirms the cause on site.
DASMA says a door that does not go up and down smoothly may be unsafe and that the spring system may be out of balance. Stop using the door.
Do not replace it yourself
DASMA says springs are arguably the most important and most dangerous part of the door and that springs should be repaired only by trained professionals. Do not wind, unwind or remove a torsion spring. Do not run the opener on a door with a broken spring. Call for spring repair.
Doors with extension springs need a safety cable through each spring. DASMA advises a safety inspection if yours do not have one.

What a quote should list
Ask for these in writing, as the Arizona Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission advise for any home repair:
- The spring type, size and cycle rating.
- Whether both springs are replaced.
- Labor, and a check of the cables, drums and balance afterward.
- The date of the work and when payment is due.
The Attorney General also says to get several estimates, to be skeptical of a bid that is too low, and never to pay for the whole project before the work begins.
