A non-insulated steel 16x7 door runs $1,400 to $2,400 and an insulated steel 16x7 door $1,800 to $3,600. Carriage house, wood and glass doors cost more. Size, insulation, windows, color and special orders change the price. We confirm the final price after we see the opening and measure.
Quick answers
How much does a new garage door cost?
A non-insulated steel 16x7 door runs $1,400 to $2,400 and an insulated steel 16x7 door $1,800 to $3,600. Carriage house, wood and glass doors cost more.
How long does it take to install a new garage door?
Stock doors are scheduled once we measure. A special order or custom size has a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks.
Does an insulated garage door cost more?
Yes. Our insulated steel 16x7 range is $1,800 to $3,600 against $1,400 to $2,400 for non-insulated. Clopay says insulation helps most for attached garages.
What should a new garage door quote include?
The FTC says a written estimate should describe the work, materials, completion date and price. Ask for the model, hardware, removal of the old door and lead time.

Add-ons that change the total
- Insulated glass upgrade: add $400 to $1,200, depending on door size and glass type
- Custom color (powder coat, anodized or stain): add $300 to $1,200
- Custom size or special order: add 20% to 40%, with a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks
An older house can have an opening that is not a standard size, which is the usual reason for a special order. Measure before you plan the date, and expect the order to take longer than a stock door.
Is insulation worth it?
Clopay lists R-values from R-6 to R-20 and above for insulated doors and near R-0 for non-insulated ones, and says insulation matters most when the garage is attached to the house or has living space above it. It also reports that insulation makes a door stronger against dents.
DASMA warns that a tested whole-door U-factor and a section R-value are different measurements and cannot be compared with each other. When you compare two doors, ask which measurement each quote uses. A garage that is only for storage may not need the highest rating.
Pick a style first, then the details
- Steel: the most common choice, with insulated and non-insulated options
- Carriage house: steel or wood-look composite with decorative hardware
- Wood: real wood needs a sealed finish and regular care
- Modern and full-view glass: aluminum frames with clear, frosted or tinted glass
See new garage doors for the styles we install. If you are replacing only a broken part, repair costs in Oregon may be the better comparison.
What the quote should list
The FTC says a written estimate should include a description of the work, materials, completion date and price, and that you should never sign with blank spaces. For a new door, ask the quote to show:
- Door model, size, insulation, windows and color
- Springs, track and hardware included
- Removal and disposal of the old door
- Opener work, if any, as a separate line
- Lead time and the start and finish dates
Compare bids carefully
The Oregon Construction Contractors Board says to get more than one written bid for bigger jobs, understand any wide variation and not automatically accept the lowest bid. A door that costs less may have thinner steel, less insulation or lighter springs. The Board also offers an online lookup for checking a contractor's license.
