How Much Does a New Garage Door Cost Installed?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 5 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

At Emil Garage Doors, a new steel garage door for a two-car opening is typically $1,400 to $2,400 non-insulated and $1,800 to $3,600 insulated. Carriage house, wood and glass styles cost more, from $2,200 up to $9,000 and beyond. The final price is confirmed after we see the opening, and the opener can add to it.

What a new garage door costs

These are our typical prices for common doors. They are ranges because size, insulation, windows and color all move the number, and the final price is confirmed after we see the opening and before we start.

Add-ons that change the total

  • Insulated glass upgrade: add $400 to $1,200
  • Custom color (powder coat, anodized or stain): add $300 to $1,200
  • Custom size or special order: add 20% to 40%, with a lead time of 4 to 8 weeks

A standard size in a stock color is the lowest-cost route. A special size or finish is made to order, so it costs more and takes longer to arrive.

Does a new door need a new opener?

Often, yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says a replacement residential garage door cannot be connected to an existing opener that has no battery backup, whatever year the opener was made. If your opener has no backup, the opener becomes part of the job.

Our typical price is $550 to $900 for a belt-drive opener with battery backup, installed, and $900 to $1,400 for a wall-mount opener, installed. If the opener is already compliant, you may need labor only. Read why a new door may need a new opener and see our opener page.

What a good quote lists

  • Door size, model, material and insulation, written out
  • Window style, color and finish
  • Whether tracks, springs, hardware and weatherstripping are new or reused
  • Whether removing and hauling away the old door is included
  • The opener, if any, and whether it has the battery backup
  • Who pulls a permit if one is needed, and the start and finish dates
  • One total price, with the lead time for special orders

A contract is also your protection. The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) says a home improvement contract should describe the work and the price, say who pulls permits, and give start and end dates. A down payment cannot be more than 10 percent of the contract price or 1,000 dollars, whichever is less.

Quick answers

How much does a new garage door cost?

A steel door for a two-car opening is typically $1,400 to $2,400 non-insulated and $1,800 to $3,600 insulated with us. Carriage house, wood, modern and glass doors cost more. The final price is confirmed after we see the opening.

How much do garage door installers cost?

Installation is built into the price of the door. Ask each quote whether installation, removal of the old door and the opener are included, so you compare the same job.

How long does it take to install a new garage door?

It depends on the door size and whether tracks and the opener are replaced. We give you an arrival window and an expected finish when we confirm the price.

Do I need a battery backup on my opener in California?

Yes. Section 19892 requires a battery backup on residential openers sold or installed in California, and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one.

How long does installation take?

The time depends on the door size, whether the tracks and opener are replaced and how much the opening needs. We confirm the schedule when we confirm the price. Ask for the arrival window and the expected finish before you sign.

Door installation is not a casual job. Amarr says installation by a trained garage door technician is highly recommended, and DASMA also recommends that trained door systems technicians install garage doors.

How to compare two quotes

A quote you can compare

  • Names the door model, insulation and size
  • Lists the hardware and the opener
  • Shows one total and the lead time

A quote that is hard to compare

  • Says only "garage door, installed"
  • Leaves the opener and removal out
  • Asks for a large payment before work starts

Read what an installation quote should include before you choose, and see our new garage door page for styles.
