The repair itself costs the same ranges whenever it happens: a spring pair $250 to $450, a cable pair $175 to $350, an off-track door $175 to $450. Some companies add an after-hours or same-day fee, and that part varies, so ask for it, and the total, before anyone is sent. A closed, safe door can usually wait for normal hours.
Emergency Garage Door Repair Cost: What to Ask Before You Book
How much does emergency repair cost?
There are two parts to an urgent bill: the repair and the extra for coming quickly. The repair ranges below are our typical prices, confirmed after we see the door. Any added charge for an urgent visit differs from company to company, so we give no figure here. Ask for it by name before you agree to a visit.
| Common urgent repair | Typical price | Quick fact |
|---|---|---|
| Torsion spring pair, standard two-car door (10,000 cycle) | $250 to $450 | A broken spring leaves the door heavy or stuck |
| Lift cable replacement, pair | $175 to $350 | A frayed or snapped cable can leave one side hanging |
| Off-track door repair | $175 to $450 | A door off its track should not be run |
| Rollers (set), sensors or tune-up | $150 to $350 | Often a nuisance, rarely an emergency |
| 12-point safety inspection | $89 | A check of springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener |
Prices reviewed November 2026. Final price is confirmed after we see the door. Any urgent-visit charge is separate: ask first.
Is my problem a real emergency?
Myth: anything that breaks at night is an emergency. Fact: what matters is whether the garage can be secured and whether the door is a danger.
- Treat as urgent: the door is stuck open and the home cannot be secured, a car is trapped inside, or the door is off its track and hanging.
- Usually safe to book for normal hours: the door is closed and safe, but the remote, sensors or a seal need work.
- Stop using it either way: a broken spring, a frayed or loose lift cable, a crooked door or a door off its tracks. Hormann and Amarr both say not to run a door in that state.

Is a phone price the final price?
Myth: the number on the phone is what you pay. Fact: nobody can price a broken part sight unseen. A fair phone answer gives the range and says the final price is confirmed once the technician sees the door.
Get the total in writing before work starts, and ask whether it includes parts, labor and the visit. CSLB says a home improvement contract should describe the work, the price and the start and end dates.
Can I still cancel an urgent repair?
CSLB explains that the usual three business day right to cancel does not apply to a service and repair contract for emergency work you request on short notice. The right to cancel ends the moment you sign and the contractor starts. Read the price before you sign, because you may not get the chance to change your mind.
CSLB also says a down payment cannot be more than 10 percent of the contract price or 1,000 dollars, whichever is less, for a home improvement job.
What to do while you wait
Garaga says the opener's release should only be pulled with the door fully closed, because releasing it with the door open can drop the full weight. If the door is hard to lift, close it carefully, step away and keep people and pets out until a technician checks it. Never touch springs, cables or drums.
Garage doors are heavy and their springs and cables are under high tension, which is why DASMA says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician.
Is it worth paying more for after-hours service?
- Yes, usually: the home is open to the street, a vehicle is trapped, or someone cannot get in or out.
- Probably not: the door is closed, nothing is broken that you can see, and you can use another entrance.
- Ask first: what the extra is, when the technician arrives and whether the quote changes once they see the door.
Five questions before you book
- What is the total for the repair, including the visit?
- Is there an after-hours or same-day charge, and how much?
- When will the technician arrive?
- What exactly will be replaced, and will both springs or both cables be done?
- Are the company name, address and contractor license number on the paperwork? CSLB says the contract should list them.

Questions people ask
How much does emergency garage door repair cost?
The repair is priced the same way as a regular visit: a torsion spring pair is $250 to $450 and a cable pair is $175 to $350 with us. Some companies add an urgent-visit charge, so ask for it and the total before you book.
Is it worth paying for after-hours garage door repair?
It is worth it if the home cannot be secured or a vehicle is trapped. If the door is closed and safe, waiting for normal hours is usually reasonable.
What should I do while waiting for the technician?
Keep the door closed if it is closed, keep people and pets away from it, and do not touch the springs, cables or drums. Do not release the opener while the door is open.
Can I cancel an emergency repair contract?
CSLB says the three business day right to cancel does not apply to an emergency service and repair contract you request on short notice, so read the price before you sign.
