Horsepower, smart features, door size and headroom change the price, and we confirm it after we see the door.

Why a battery backup is part of the price
Under California Health and Safety Code section 19892, an opener installed in a California home on or after July 1, 2019 must have a battery backup that works during an outage. That is why our installed prices include one. The same section also bars connecting a replacement residential door to an older opener that lacks it, which is why a new door can bring a new opener. See the battery backup law and why a new door needs a new opener.

Belt-drive or wall-mount
Belt-drive opener
- Mounts on a rail on the ceiling
- Lower installed price in our table
- Needs ceiling space for the rail
Wall-mount (jackshaft) opener
- Mounts on the wall beside the door
- Higher installed price in our table
- Made for torsion spring doors
LiftMaster's installation requirements for its residential wall-mount openers are for sectional doors with torsion springs, and they call for clearance around the torsion bar. Which one suits your garage depends on headroom, the spring type and the door. More in garage door opener types.
What else can change the price
- Horsepower and features. Stronger motors, Wi-Fi control and cameras or lights cost more.
- Door size and weight. A heavy or oversized door needs a stronger opener.
- Wiring. A new outlet, a longer run or a keypad adds time.
- The door's condition. Chamberlain notes an opener that cannot finish a cycle may be working against a door that is unbalanced, sticking or binding. A spring pair runs $250 to $450, and rollers or a tune-up run $150 to $350.
- Haul-away of the old opener. Ask whether removal is included.
Opener only, or labor only
If you bought an opener yourself, installation labor alone is $150 to $450, and wall-mount units take longer. The opener still has to meet California's battery backup rule, and the door has to be balanced first. We tell you if something needs fixing before the opener goes on.
What a good opener quote lists
- Brand, model and drive type
- Whether the battery backup is included
- Sensors, remotes and keypad included or extra
- Any door repair the opener needs first
- Testing of the safety reverse and sensors before the technician leaves
- The total price before work starts
Ask if the price is for the opener installed, with the backup, or only for the unit. The difference can be several hundred dollars.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to install a garage door opener?
A belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900 with us, a wall-mount opener installed is $900 to $1,400, and installation labor alone is $150 to $450. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
Does the opener price include a battery backup?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 requires a battery backup on residential openers installed in the state, so our installed prices include one.
Can I install the opener myself to save money?
Openers are heavy, wired and tied to the door's safety reverse, and the door has to be balanced first. We recommend a technician, and we test the reverse and the sensors before we leave.
Why does a new door sometimes mean a new opener?
California law bars connecting a replacement residential door to an existing opener that lacks the battery backup, whatever year the opener was made.
