A city of 1950s houses with large lots in Richland Farms
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median year built for homes in Compton is 1957, and about 59 percent were built before 1960. The 1950s are the largest group, with the 1940s next. About 74 percent of homes are single-family, about 56 percent are owner-occupied, and the median home value is about $580,000. Springs are rated for a set number of open-and-close cycles, so doors on houses this age have often been repaired before.
Compton was incorporated in 1888, according to Wikipedia, and is named for Griffith Dickenson Compton, who led a group of pioneers to the area in 1867. Richland Farms, laid out from the city's founding land donation, has large lots zoned for agriculture, with tracts sold around 1911 and 1912. We found no gated communities or HOAs in the sources we read.
We check the whole door at each visit, not only the part that failed, because a worn roller or cable often sits next to a broken spring. On an older opener we also explain the battery backup California requires on a replacement.

- Detached garages on larger lots

What Compton conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Compton shows average highs of about 77 degrees in June, 81 in July, 82 in August and 81 in September, about 14 inches of rain a year, and a record high of 111. Summer heat dries out lubricant and ages plastic parts, and winter rain collects in the lower tracks and under bottom seals.
We found no Compton wind figures. A January 2025 windstorm left nearly 50,000 Los Angeles County residents without power, according to KFI, and ABC7 reported about 974 customers out in a Compton-area outage in 2017. FOX LA also listed Compton among Southern California Edison outage areas in a heat wave. With outages like these, know where your manual release is and keep the battery backup working.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse by laying a board flat under the door. Press the test button on the battery backup at the same time.
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Test the battery backup twice a year
- Know where the manual release is
What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

Compton Building and Safety. Compton is its own city, with a Building and Safety Department at City Hall, 205 S. Willowbrook Avenue (comptoncity.org). The phone number we found, (310) 605-5509, is printed on the city's permit forms, so confirm it when you call. We could not find a Compton page that addresses garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm a garage-door-specific rule. Ask the department before a replacement.

What is the average price to repair a garage door in Compton?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Compton?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Compton?
Compton homes use ZIP codes 90220, 90221 and 90222. ZIP codes 90223 and 90224 are PO boxes. Call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Compton?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Compton, so ask the city's Building and Safety Department before a replacement. The phone number printed on its permit forms is (310) 605-5509; confirm it when you call. Compton has its own building department, not Los Angeles.
What is Richland Farms in Compton?
Richland Farms is a Compton neighborhood of large residential lots zoned for agriculture, laid out from the land donated at the city's 1888 founding. We service garage doors there as in the rest of the city.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can handle a simple job like a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Compton?
