My garage door spring broke the other evening and I was unable to open my door. I contacted them first thing the next day. They were able to give me an appointment for later in that day. The service technician called prior to arrival as promised & arrived shortly afterwards. He recommended some additional service to the door in addition to the springs which I accepted. The door was repaired in less than 2 hours & now works better than ever. Thank youBrandi · Google review
Great to work with, gave us good advise and very knowledgeable with garage door springs . We could not find anyone to do our repair ASAP as it was a small project, but that did not matter to them. They traveled 2 hours to get the work done. Tech who did our repair was very personable, fast and did an excellent job.Theresa · Google review
I was really happy with the work Emil did for me. He was a responsive communicator, arrived on time, and did a quality job on the repair I needed. I would hire him again without hesitation.Serenity · Google review
Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review

Mid-century houses from the bay flats up into the hills
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in El Cerrito was built in 1956. About 59 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 67 percent of the city's 11,247 homes are detached houses. The median owner-occupied home value is about $1.12 million. Doors on homes from the 1950s and later have often had their first springs and opener replaced, and many of the city's homes have their own garage.
Wikipedia says the settlement was founded by refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was first called Rust and was renamed El Cerrito in 1916, and that the city incorporated in 1917. The land rises from 20 feet to 934 feet above sea level, so some garages sit on a slope. We could not verify the usual driveway shapes or garage styles, or any homeowners association, so we look at each door as it stands.
Tell us the cross street and whether the driveway is steep, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs, and we add a battery backup when an older opener is replaced.
- Original parts on doors from the 1950s and 1960s
- Garages on sloping driveways
- Opener replacement with battery backup

What El Cerrito conditions do to a garage door
We found no weather table for El Cerrito itself, so we use the nearest verified numbers, from nearby Berkeley. Wikipedia's Berkeley table, based on 1991-2020 normals, puts the average daily high near 59 degrees in January and near 76 in September, the warmest month, with a record high of 107, a record low of 24 and about 25 to 26 inches of rain a year. General weather sources describe cool foggy mornings from the bay, with hot offshore winds able to override them. We found no El Cerrito wind or power outage records.
Wikipedia says the Hayward Fault runs through El Cerrito, and gives the 1868 Hayward earthquake at about magnitude 6.3 to 7.0, with estimates differing, and a 14.3 percent USGS chance of one or more magnitude 6.7 or larger quakes on the fault in the 30 years after 2014. A news report from CC Pulse in February 2025 lists El Cerrito among 12 Contra Costa cities with areas in very high fire hazard severity zones under the State Fire Marshal's updated maps. It gives no acreage for El Cerrito, and we could not verify which streets are in the zone.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and look at the cables for fraying. After a strong shake, run the door slowly by hand with the opener disconnected, and call us if it binds. When the power goes out, use the manual release.
- Check tracks and cables after a strong shake
- Know where the manual release is
- Oil rollers and hinges twice a year

Battery backup, permits and design rules in El Cerrito
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. El Cerrito is its own city in Contra Costa County, so its rules come from the City of El Cerrito, not Berkeley. City Hall is at 10890 San Pablo Avenue, and the Building Permits office lists 510-215-4360 and buildingapplications@elcerrito.gov, with over-the-counter permits through the city's eTRAKiT system. The Permit Counter page lists hours of Monday and Wednesday 8am to 4pm, Tuesday and Thursday 8am to 6pm, and every other Friday 8am to 4pm. It does not say when a permit is required, and we found no city statement on garage doors or openers, so we could not confirm a rule. Ask Building Permits before the work at elcerrito.gov.
Fire zone, hillside and historic rules. We could not verify which El Cerrito streets are in a very high fire hazard severity zone, or whether the city has door or vent requirements there, so use the CAL FIRE address lookup and ask the city. We found no hillside or historic district rule for garage doors, and could not verify any.

El Cerrito garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in El Cerrito?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in El Cerrito (ZIP 94530) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in El Cerrito?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in El Cerrito?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in El Cerrito?
El Cerrito homes use ZIP code 94530, according to zip-codes.com. We also serve nearby Albany, Berkeley and Richmond, so call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement in El Cerrito need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for El Cerrito, because the city's Permit Counter page does not say when a permit is required. Call the Building Permits office at 510-215-4360 to ask whether your door or opener work needs one.
Is my El Cerrito home in a fire hazard zone?
A news report from February 2025 says parts of El Cerrito are in very high fire hazard severity zones, but it gives no streets or acreage, and we could not verify the boundaries. Use the CAL FIRE address lookup or ask the city, and check whether any rule applies to your door before you order.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in El Cerrito?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
