Why gates in San Bernardino stop working
These are the faults we hear about most. The real cause is confirmed on site.
| Symptom | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate stuck open or stuck closed | A failed operator, a locked manual release or a power fault | Use the manual release as the maker directs, then diagnose the operator |
| Gate reverses without touching anything | Dirty photo eyes, a bent bracket or a force setting that is too low | Clean and realign the photo eyes and reset the force |
| Gate swings or slides unevenly | A leaf out of level, worn hinges or a loose track | Level the leaf, replace hinges, tighten the track |
| Clicking sound but no movement | A weak battery or a failed starting capacitor | Test the battery and the capacitor and replace the weak one |
| Solar gate stops after a few cycles | A weak panel, an old battery or shade on the panel | Test the panel and the battery, clean or move the panel |
| Remote or keypad gives no response | Dead batteries, a lost code or a receiver fault | Replace batteries, reprogram the code, test the receiver |
Do not run an operator against a gate that is jammed or dragging.

Older neighborhoods, apartments and foothill homes
San Bernardino is the county seat of San Bernardino County. According to the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year American Community Survey, the median home was built in 1973, about 61 percent of its housing units are single-family detached houses and about half of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The one-year table puts roughly 18 percent of buildings at five or more units.
Wikipedia names neighborhoods such as the University District, Seccombe Park, the Base Line corridor, the Mount Vernon Avenue area on the West Side and Arrowhead Springs, the northernmost, at about 3,000 feet. We could not confirm any named gated or HOA community in the city. Older homes may still have original hinges, posts and operators, and apartment or shared entries can involve a landlord or neighbor in a repair.
Whether yours is an older swing gate on a 1970s lot or a sliding gate at a shared drive, we start with the gate and posts, then test the operator and the controls.
- Gates on homes from the 1950s through the 1980s
- Original hinges, posts and operators
- Shared entries at apartments and multi-unit properties

What San Bernardino weather does to a gate
Wikipedia classifies San Bernardino as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with mean daily highs of about 96 degrees in July and 97 degrees in August, 16 inches of rain a year and a record of 118 degrees on July 6, 2018. Heat that long works on batteries, control boards and plastic parts.
Wikipedia says Santa Ana winds can reach about 60 miles per hour, bring down power lines and raise wildfire danger in foothill neighborhoods. The Old Fire of October 2003 started near Waterman Canyon and threatened the city, and evacuation orders from the Line Fire on September 7, 2024 extended into foothill neighborhoods. In a power cut or an evacuation, a gate that cannot be opened by hand is a problem, so a healthy backup battery and a working manual release matter.
Before fire and wind season, test the backup battery, check that the operator releases and wipe ash and dust from the sensors.
- Test the backup battery before fall winds
- Check the manual release works
- Wipe dust and ash from sensors and tracks

Technician, Emil, was prompt and efficient to identify and fix the issues with our garage door. Rest assured that I won’t hesitate to call these folks if repair is needed.MeMee · Google review
Emil responded to my request for service promptly. He scheduled service for the next day and showed up on time. He was friendly and polite. He Immediately identified the problems and fixed them effectively and efficiently. He showed resourcefulness in coming up with a used part for an old door opener control and in coming up with a practical solution for stabilizing the door connection to the opener. Price for the work was very fair. Great company !! Thank you!!Christina · Google review
"Our garage door broke this morning, which was less than ideal. We were certain that it would cost a fortune to get it repaired on a Sunday, assuming it could even happen, but we knew we had to try. I called several companies and only two returned my call. One said that while they could send someone out, it would cost considerably more than if we could wait until Monday. While I appreciated the honesty, again, I wanted it fixed today. The other was Emil Garage Doors. When I had called they said they would call back. I did get a call back from Emil, less than an hour later. Anyway, on to the service. He let me know that it would cost the same to come today or tomorrow, it didn't matter. WOW and WOW again! He said that he could head here in about an hour. Additionally, when I asked him the cost of the various things it could be, what he quoted me were prices that were what the other place wanted to charge me after the service call fee and the hiked up hourly rate for the Sunday call! Upon arrival, he looked at the door, told us a few things that he noticed, and in no way did he ever try to "up-sell" us something we didn't need. He told us our opener was what they use, and top of the line. He replaced the gear drive (maybe that's the name:)) and upgraded our rollers (that was a suggestion, but, one we totally understood and he in no way said we "needed" to). I think he was in and out in 45 minutes at most and our garage door is quieter than before by a TON (thank you rollers) and, more importantly, it works and nobody had to miss work on Monday to make it happen. Thank you so much...I can't recommend your company enough. "Pamela · Google review
Emil is delightful, knowledgeable, professional, and capable. He promised to make the process easy and he did. From our first contact Thursday mid-day through completion of the project Saturday at Noon, everything was 100% perfect, and we are extremely happy. We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn · Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel · Google review
We interviewed several popular companies and we found that their quality, price, and level of professionalism is unmatched!Cory · Google review

What to check, and what to leave alone
Most gate problems have a simple first check: is there power, is the battery charged and is anything in the path or in front of a sensor? Check those before you call, and leave everything else alone.
Springs are not the issue on a gate, but motors, chains and moving leaves can still pinch and crush. Keep hands out of hinges, tracks and drive parts.
- Check the outlet, breaker and battery
- Clear leaves, dirt and objects from the path and the sensors
- Leave the control board and wiring to us
Permits, HOAs and emergency access in San Bernardino
City permits. The City of San Bernardino's Building & Safety Division has its permit counter at 201 North E Street. The division's main line is 909-998-2230, and inspections are scheduled through SB Direct at 909-998-2000. The city's page says permits are generally required for structural, electrical, plumbing and heating or air-conditioning work, with exceptions, and lists fences not over 7 feet (not masonry) as exempt. It does not mention gates or gate operators, so we could not confirm whether a gate or its wiring needs a permit. Call before a new gate or new electrical work. This is the city's division, separate from the County's Building and Safety office. City information is at sanbernardino.gov.
Fire code and foothills. The city says the California Fire Code is enforced by the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. A city code chapter listed in a code library describes a Foothill Fire Zone Overlay for foothill and very high hazard properties, but we could not open it, so ask the city whether it applies to your address before you change a gate there.
Fire department access. A locked gate can slow emergency crews. Ask the local fire department what it requires, for example a key switch or Knox box, before you install or change an entry.
Design rules. Planned communities and HOAs can limit gate style, height and color. Ask first, and we can give you a written scope for their review.
Entrapment protection. The UL 325 standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for devices such as photo eyes or contact edges. We test these devices every time we repair an operator.

San Bernardino gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in San Bernardino?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in San Bernardino (ZIP codes 92401, 92403, 92404, 92405, 92407, 92408, 92410 and 92411) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in San Bernardino?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in San Bernardino means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in San Bernardino?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
Hum without movement points to a binding gate or a failed capacitor, gear or arm. Keep the operator off, and we free the gate and test the parts.
How much does gate repair cost in San Bernardino?
A sensor, remote or hinge costs far less than an operator or a rebuilt post. We quote after we see the problem and before we start, so you know the price first.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in San Bernardino?
San Bernardino uses ZIP codes 92401, 92403, 92404, 92405, 92407, 92408, 92410 and 92411. Some of these ZIPs also cover unincorporated areas next to the city, so call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Can a gate be opened by hand during a power outage or an evacuation?
Most operators have a manual release, but it differs by model and the lock may be on a key or a lever. Ask us to show you where yours is and test it, and replace a weak backup battery before wind and fire season.
Do you repair gates on foothill homes in San Bernardino?
Yes. Sloped drives and long approaches put extra load on an operator, and a gate can drift on a slope. We check the arm, the hinges and the limit settings, and we replace worn parts.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in San Bernardino too?
Yes. See garage door repair in San Bernardino for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
