Foothill tracts and hillside homes
Highland sits at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains in San Bernardino County. According to Census Bureau 2024 five-year American Community Survey estimates, about 75 percent of its homes are single-family detached houses, about 64 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and the median home was built in 1983.
The city's own About page names East Highlands Ranch as a master-planned community and says several residential developers are building in the city. The same page dates the original townsite to 1891, and Wikipedia lists a Highland Historic District on Palm Avenue. We could not confirm that any named community is gated or has an HOA, so check your own association's rules before you change a gate.
Homes from the 1980s onward are old enough for hinges to sag, batteries to weaken and remotes to drift. On sloped foothill driveways we also check that a gate does not creep on its own, then test the operator, sensors and keypad.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

Great company to use for garage door work. Came out promptly, over a weekend when I could not get others to respond. Efficient work, very knowledgeable, very friendly. I would not hesitate to contact them first the next time I need service.Courtney Β· Google review
Incredible honest work. Emil took care of all the repairs needed in order for my garage door to work again. I know I need a new garage door but I can't afford it right now this company was nice enough to fix it instead of hounding me for more money to get a new door. Emil was so nice that he even provided me a price. I was so happy he said I could call him when I had the money and he would honor me the price. amazing company to reach out to.Jasmine Β· Google review

What foothill fire season does to a gate
Wikipedia says the Line Fire started on September 5, 2024 along Base Line near Alpin Street in East Highland, during a multi-day heatwave, and ordered more than 9,200 homes to evacuate. Highland also sits at about 1,300 feet against the mountains, where smoke and ash can settle on photo-eye lenses and in sliding-gate tracks.
Heat ages backup batteries, plastic housings and lubricants. We could not find a Highland-specific record of power outages, but a dead battery in an evacuation is the worst time to learn a gate will not open. Know where the manual release on your operator is and how to use it.
Before fire season, wipe the sensor lenses, clear the track, test the backup battery and practice the manual release.
- Wipe smoke and ash from sensors
- Replace weak backup batteries before summer
- Learn the manual release on your operator
Why gates in Highland stop working
These are the faults we hear about most. The real cause is confirmed on site.
| Symptom | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Gate stuck open or stuck closed | A failed operator, a locked manual release or a power fault | Use the manual release as the maker directs, then diagnose the operator |
| Gate reverses without touching anything | Dirty photo eyes, a bent bracket or a force setting that is too low | Clean and realign the photo eyes and reset the force |
| Gate swings or slides unevenly | A leaf out of level, worn hinges or a loose track | Level the leaf, replace hinges, tighten the track |
| Clicking sound but no movement | A weak battery or a failed starting capacitor | Test the battery and the capacitor and replace the weak one |
| Solar gate stops after a few cycles | A weak panel, an old battery or shade on the panel | Test the panel and the battery, clean or move the panel |
| Remote or keypad gives no response | Dead batteries, a lost code or a receiver fault | Replace batteries, reprogram the code, test the receiver |
Do not run an operator against a gate that is jammed or dragging.

Permits, HOAs and emergency access in Highland
City permits. Highland's Building & Safety Division is at 27215 Base Line, phone (909) 864-6861 ext. 232, and permits also go through the city's Building Safety and Fire Permit Portal at highlandca.gov. The city pages we read do not say whether a gate, a gate operator or its wiring needs a permit, so call the city before a new gate or new electrical work.
Fire hazard zones. Highland's fire services are contracted with Cal Fire. The city says the State Fire Marshal published a Local Responsibility Area fire hazard severity zone map on March 25, 2025 and that the city must adopt it by ordinance. We could not confirm the adoption or which streets are in a zone, so ask the Fire Marshal at ext. 248 before you change a gate near the foothills.
Fire department access. A locked gate can slow emergency crews. Ask the local fire department what it requires, for example a key switch or Knox box, before you install or change an entry.
Design rules. Planned communities and HOAs can limit gate style, height and color. Ask first, and we can give you a written scope for their review.
Entrapment protection. The UL 325 standard covers automatic gate operators and calls for devices such as photo eyes or contact edges. We test these devices every time we repair an operator.

Highland gate repair: questions we hear
Is there gate repair near me in Highland?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs swing and sliding driveway gates in Highland (ZIP 92346) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood, the gate type and what it does, and we book the soonest visit. See gate repair near me.
Is there electric gate repair near me in Highland?
Yes. Electric gate repair near me in Highland means a technician who repairs the operator, control board, sensors, remotes and backup battery as well as the gate itself. Call (213) 340-4232 and we book the soonest visit. See electric gate repair.
What is the difference between gate repair and electric gate repair in Highland?
Gate repair means the gate itself: hinges, posts, latches, wheels, tracks and frames. Electric gate repair means the parts that move it: the operator, control board, sensors, remotes, keypads and battery. Most service calls need both checked, so we start with the gate and then test the electronics. See gate repair.
Why does my electric gate hum but not open?
Hum without movement points to a binding gate or a failed capacitor, gear or arm. Keep the operator off, and we free the gate and test the parts.
How much does gate repair cost in Highland?
A sensor, remote or hinge costs far less than an operator or a rebuilt post. We quote after we see the problem and before we start, so you know the price first.
My gate does not work during a power outage. What can I do?
Most operators have a manual release, and many can use a backup battery. Use the release as the manufacturer directs and call us. We test the battery and the control board, because a flat battery or a board that lost its settings after an outage is common.
Should electric gates be serviced?
Yes. A yearly check of the battery, sensors, hinges or track, and operator keeps a gate from failing at a bad time.
Can you repair a gate operator from any brand?
We repair most residential operators. Tell us the brand and model, or send a photo of the unit. If parts are no longer made we explain your options.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Highland?
Highland uses ZIP code 92346 and no other ZIP. The city line with San Bernardino is irregular, so some Highland-style addresses fall on the other side. Call us with your address if you are not sure we reach you.
Can wildfire smoke affect an electric gate in Highland?
Smoke and ash can coat photo-eye lenses and collect in tracks, which can make a gate stop or reverse. We clean and realign the sensors, clear the track and test the backup battery.
Can a handyman fix a gate?
A handyman can handle a loose latch or a dead remote battery. A failed operator, a control board or a gate that has dropped off its hinges needs a technician who can test the controls and the safety devices.
Do you repair garage doors in Highland too?
Yes. See garage door repair in Highland for springs, cables, openers and new doors, and garage door repair near me. When you ask for both we can look at the gate and the garage door at the same address.
