The Solano County seat, mostly houses from the 1980s
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Fairfield was built in 1986. About 61 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and about 69 percent of all homes are single-family detached houses, with another 7 percent attached. Roughly 16 percent sit in buildings of five or more units, so the city also has many apartment and condo garages. A door installed in the 1980s has often lived through a second set of springs or an opener swap.
Wikipedia says Captain Robert H. Waterman founded Fairfield in 1856, naming it for his hometown in Connecticut, and the city became the county seat in 1858 and incorporated in 1903. It is also the home of Travis Air Force Base, the host unit of which is the 60th Air Mobility Wing, and Wikipedia lists the base as the largest employer in the city and Solano County. Jelly Belly's headquarters and factory are here, and the six-mile Fairfield Linear Park follows an old railroad right-of-way.
Fairfield is a big city, so a call from Cordelia and a call from near Air Base Parkway can be a long drive apart. Tell us your cross street and whether the garage is a single door, a pair or part of a shared lot, and we book the soonest visit. A homeowners association's approval is separate from the city's, so check your own rules before ordering a new door.

Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review

What Fairfield conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's climate table for Fairfield uses NOAA 1991-2020 normals and does not name the station. It classes the climate as hot-summer Mediterranean, with mean daily highs of 85.4 degrees in June, 89.6 in July, 89.2 in August and 86.9 in September, an annual precipitation of 24.53 inches and a record high of 117 degrees in September. A Daily Republic report found through search showed an excessive heat warning for Solano County during the September 2022 heat wave. Heat dries out lubricant and rubber seals and makes a door and opener work harder.
In August 2020, parts of Fairfield were evacuated because of the LNU Lightning Complex fires, which burned over 315,000 acres across five counties, according to Wikipedia. According to Solano NewsNet, the National Weather Service has issued wind advisories for Fairfield and Vacaville with winds of 15 to 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph, and CBS reported Red Flag Warnings covering Fairfield and Travis Air Force Base. We did not verify seasonal wind averages. Federal disaster aid went to Napa and Solano counties after the 2014 South Napa earthquake, but we could not verify damage in Fairfield.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and test the battery backup. Make sure everyone in the house knows where the opener's emergency release handle is.
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer
- Know where the emergency release handle is
- Test the battery backup twice a year

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Fairfield
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Fairfield is its own city, so its rules come from the City of Fairfield, not Solano County. The Building Safety Division, part of Community Development, is at 1000 Webster Street, 2nd Floor, and the phone number from search results is 707-428-7451, with the email Building@fairfield.ca.gov. Permits can be filed through the city's eTRAKiT system and its newer Fairfield BUILD portal, or at the Webster Street office. The city site did not open for us, so this comes from search summaries and you should confirm it. We could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit, so ask Building Safety before the work at fairfield.ca.gov.
Fire zones, hillsides and historic areas. We could not verify a Very High Fire Hazard zone, hillside rules or a historic district for any part of Fairfield. If your home is near open hills or an older part of town, ask the city whether anything applies.

Fairfield garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Fairfield?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Fairfield (ZIP 94533, 94534 and 94535) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Fairfield?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Fairfield?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Fairfield?
Fairfield uses ZIP codes 94533, 94534 and 94535. ZIP code 94534 is shared with part of Suisun City, and 94535 is used by addresses around Travis Air Force Base. We also serve nearby Suisun City and Vacaville, so call us if you are not sure we reach your address.
Does a garage door replacement in Fairfield need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Fairfield. Call Fairfield Building Safety at 707-428-7451 to ask whether your door or opener work needs one, and confirm that number with the city first. If you live in a homeowners association, its approval is a separate step.
How do I open my garage door by hand during a wildfire evacuation or power outage in Fairfield?
Parts of Fairfield were evacuated in August 2020. As general advice, pull the opener's emergency release handle to disconnect the door, then lift it by the handle at the bottom. If the door feels very heavy or a spring is broken, do not force it. Call us, because a broken spring means the door is no longer balanced.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Fairfield?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
