What Paso Robles weather does to a garage door
The numbers come from NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Paso Robles station, as shown by Wikipedia. Average highs run from 61.9 degrees in January to 92.1 in August, and the annual mean high is 76.3 degrees. About 21 days a year reach 100 degrees or more, and about 54 nights a year drop to 32 degrees or lower. Annual precipitation is 15.26 inches, mostly December through March, with June through September near zero. That range is hard on door seals, lubricant and opener electronics. We did not verify any Paso Robles wind or fog statistics.
Local news, a weaker source, reported that PG&E public safety power shutoff watches have named areas of northern San Luis Obispo County near Paso Robles, and that a Paso Robles shutoff opened a community resource center at Cuesta College's North County Campus, though we could not confirm the dates. A battery backup keeps the opener working, and you should know where the manual release is. If you suspect a broken spring, call us instead of lifting the door.
Before the first 100-degree stretch, wipe the tracks, oil the rollers and hinges, and look at the seals for cracks. Press the test button on the battery backup.
- Check seals for heat cracking
- Test the battery backup
- Oil rollers and hinges before summer

Newer subdivisions, an older downtown and a 2003 earthquake in memory
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Paso Robles was built in 1987, the newest of the four San Luis Obispo County cities we serve. About 61 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 75 percent of all homes are single-unit houses, detached or attached. The Census puts the median owner-occupied home value at about $687,200. Doors from the late 1980s and 1990s are now reaching the end of the cycle rating on their springs.
On December 22, 2003, the San Simeon earthquake, about magnitude 6.5, struck roughly 24 miles from Paso Robles. According to Wikipedia and the Paso Robles Daily News, the 1892 Acorn Building collapsed and two women died, and many old downtown brick buildings were hit hard. Buildings with even partial retrofits did not collapse, the Daily News quoted CNN as saying. That history is about old masonry, not garage doors, but it is a reminder that a door that jams or hangs crooked after a shake should be checked before anyone lifts it. The city also has design guidelines for a Spring Street District, a Riverside Avenue District, Historic District B and a Westside Historic District.
Planned communities and subdivisions here often use wide two- and three-car doors. We could not verify which communities are gated or what any association requires, so ask yours before you order. Tell us your cross street and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
Called the office to let them know my issues and asked if we could get someone out to look at my door. Was told between 11-12...drove home from work at 11:05 and Emil was waiting and ready to get to work. Not knowing anything about how to fix a garage door, Emil did a great job explaining why I was having issues. Quoted a reasonable price (well at least what I thought was reasonable) and less than 40 minute later he had fixed the problem. Great customer service from intake of the call to fixing my door! If you need a garage door repair...support local business and give them your business, you won't be disappointed.Guadalupe · Google review
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Paso Robles
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| A loud bang from the garage | A torsion spring snapped | Replace both springs and balance the door |
| The door shakes or scrapes going up | Worn rollers, dry hinges or loose track bolts | Replace rollers, tighten the track and lubricate |
| The door stops partway and reverses | A blocked or misaligned sensor, or a force setting | Clean and realign the sensors and reset the force |
| Daylight shows under the door | A worn bottom seal or an uneven door | Replace the seal and level the door |
| The opener is slow or very noisy | An old chain or belt, or a worn motor | Service or replace the opener, with the battery backup California requires |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Battery backup, permits and design rules in Paso Robles
Opener law. A battery backup is required on residential openers sold or installed in California (Health and Safety Code section 19892), and a replacement door cannot be connected to an older opener without one. If your opener is old, plan for a new one. See opener installation.
Associations. Check any HOA or historic overlay rules before you order a new door, and see new garage doors for style options.
City permits. Paso Robles is its own city, so its rules come from the City of El Paso de Robles, not San Luis Obispo County. The Building Division is at 1000 Spring Street and takes calls at (805) 237-3850, Monday to Friday, 8 to 5, or email at building@prcity.com. The inspection line is (805) 227-7222, and permits go in electronically through PasoPermits.com. The Building page does not say which projects need a permit and tells people to call if unsure, so we could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs one. Details at prcity.com.
Downtown design guidelines. The city publishes design guidelines for its downtown districts. A search result for the Westside Historic District guidelines suggests they discourage double garage doors on street-front facades, but we could not open that document, so we could not confirm it. We also could not confirm whether any guideline covers a simple garage door swap. If your home is downtown or on the Westside, ask the city first.

Paso Robles garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Paso Robles?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Paso Robles (ZIP 93446) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Paso Robles?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Paso Robles?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Paso Robles?
Paso Robles homes use ZIP code 93446. ZIP code 93447 is for PO boxes only, according to zip-codes.com. Heritage Ranch and Lake Nacimiento share the 93446 ZIP as aliases. We also serve nearby Templeton and Atascadero, so call us with your street and we confirm we reach it.
Does a garage door replacement in Paso Robles need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule for Paso Robles. The city's Building page says to call if you are not sure. Call the Building Division at (805) 237-3850 to ask whether your door or opener work needs a permit, and confirm the number with the city.
Do the downtown design rules affect a garage door in Paso Robles?
We could not confirm this. The city has design guidelines for downtown districts, and a search result for the Westside Historic District guidelines suggests they discourage double garage doors on street fronts, but we could not open the document. Ask the city before you order a new door for a downtown or Westside home.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Paso Robles?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
