A high desert city of houses built around 1981
According to the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimates, the median home in Ridgecrest was built in 1981, which makes it the oldest housing stock of these four Kern County cities. About 69 percent of homes are single-family detached houses, about 5 percent sit in buildings with five or more units and about 8 percent are mobile homes. Roughly 59 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied home value is about $253,900. A door from around 1981 has often had its springs and opener replaced more than once.
Ridgecrest sits in the Indian Wells Valley at about 2,290 feet, ringed by the Sierra Nevada, the Coso Range, the Argus Range and the El Paso Mountains, according to Wikipedia. The Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake is next to the city and is the top employer, with 5,922 employees in the city's 2024 list. We found no named homeowners association or gated community, so we do not claim one.
Ridgecrest is far from the San Joaquin Valley cities, about 110 miles from Bakersfield. Tell us your cross street, whether the door is a single or a pair and how old it is, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing springs.

We are amazed when we look outside and see our beautiful new door, so soon after searching on google. Emil and his company deserve 100 stars but we are limited to only 5Dawn Β· Google review
It went very well, with the job being completed in three days. We waited few months for the supply chain to kick in ( Covid related delays ) and finally deliver the products. It was so worth the wait. Great installers, Emil and his team are professional and friendly, too, and patient in answering questions.Rachel Β· Google review

What Ridgecrest conditions do to a garage door
Wikipedia's text gives an average July high of 103 degrees and an average December high of 60, with under 5 inches of precipitation a year, and says the all-time high of 119 was set on July 11, 2021. A separate China Lake station table puts the annual mean high at 81.4 and precipitation at 4.67 inches. The two sets differ, and the page does not say why, so treat the numbers as approximate. Wikipedia also says wind can reach 75 mph, but names no event, so we do not rely on it.
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for the Indian Wells Valley on April 1, 2025, naming Ridgecrest and Inyokern, with west winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. A December 17, 2025 advisory also named Ridgecrest, with gusts up to 45 mph. Other advisories mention blowing dust. A M6.4 earthquake struck on July 4, 2019, and the M7.1 followed on July 5, with its epicenter about 10 miles northeast of Ridgecrest. Reports say damage in the city was mostly to vulnerable older houses, mobile homes and contents, with no reported deaths. As general advice, not a sourced Ridgecrest finding, an earthquake can rack a door frame and knock tracks and openers out of alignment.
Wipe the tracks after windy, dusty days, oil the rollers and hinges and check that the door still runs level. If it rubs, jams or looks crooked after a quake or a storm, stop using it and call us.
- Clear dust and grit from the tracks
- Check that the door runs level after a quake or storm
- Test the battery backup twice a year

Battery backup, permits and design rules in Ridgecrest
Battery backup. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one. See opener installation.
HOAs and style rules. If you live in a planned community or a historic overlay, check style and color rules before you choose a new door. See new garage doors for styles.
City permits. Ridgecrest is its own city, so its rules come from the Ridgecrest Building Department, not Kern County. We read its pages directly: the department is at ridgecrest-ca.gov, its number is (760) 499-5072 and its email is permits@ridgecrest-ca.gov. The page says residential projects may need plan review depending on scope, that plans are sent as PDFs, that contractors need a City of Ridgecrest business license in addition to a state license, and that the city uses the 2025 California Building Standards Code. A staff directory snippet lists hours of Monday to Thursday 7:30 to 5:30 and closed Friday, so confirm them. Neither the department page nor the Building and Equipment Permits page mentions garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a garage door or opener replacement needs a permit.
Fire permits and other rules. Fire permits and information go to Kern County Fire Department at (760) 375-8466, according to the city. We found no hillside, historic or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone rule for Ridgecrest, which lies on a flat desert floor. Ask the Building Department before your job.

Ridgecrest garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Ridgecrest?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Ridgecrest (ZIP 93555) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (213) 340-4232, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Ridgecrest?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Ridgecrest?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP code do you serve in Ridgecrest?
Ridgecrest uses ZIP code 93555, and 93556 is for PO boxes only. ZIP 93555 also covers nearby unincorporated areas such as China Lake Acres and Ridgecrest Heights, so call us if you are not sure we cover your address. We also serve Inyokern.
Does a garage door replacement in Ridgecrest need a permit?
We could not confirm a garage-door-specific permit rule. The city's Building Department pages do not mention garage doors. Call the Ridgecrest Building Department at (760) 499-5072 to ask whether your job needs a permit.
Should I check my garage door after an earthquake in Ridgecrest?
Yes. Ridgecrest had a M6.4 and a M7.1 earthquake in July 2019. As general advice, shaking can knock a door out of alignment. Check that it runs level and quietly. If it rubs, jams or hangs crooked, stop using it and call us, because a damaged spring or cable is dangerous to lift by hand.
Can a handyman fix a garage door?
A handyman can often handle a simple job such as a sensor or a roller. Springs and cables are under high tension and need a trained technician, so call us for those.
Does California require a battery backup on a garage door opener?
Yes. California Health and Safety Code section 19892 says residential openers sold or installed in the state need a battery backup, and a replacement garage door cannot be connected to an older residential opener that lacks one.
Do you also repair gates in Ridgecrest?
Yes. See gate repair and electric gate repair.
