What Danville weather does to a garage door
Wikipedia's 1991-2020 normals for the Danville station give a January average high of 35.3 degrees and low of 19.5, a July high of 85.4, and about 43.2 inches of precipitation a year, with a record low of minus 26 in January 1994. Cold stiffens grease and weatherstripping and can break a spring that has many cycles on it, and summer heat wears seals and rollers.
Local reporting of a National Weather Service survey says two EF-1 tornadoes crossed Vermilion County on June 11, 2026, and that the damage inside Danville came from straight-line winds of 80 to 100 mph. Wind like that can bend tracks and push a light door out of its frame. After a storm, look for bent track sections and dented panels before you run the opener, and know where your manual release is in an outage.
Twice a year, wipe the tracks, lubricate the rollers and hinges, and test the safety reverse. Before a hard freeze, clear ice from the bottom seal so the door does not freeze to the slab.
- Clear ice from the bottom seal in winter
- Lubricate rollers and hinges twice a year
- Know where the manual release is

Pre-war frame houses and mid-century homes in an older river city
According to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020-2024, Danville has about 13,948 housing units with a median year built of 1951. About 44 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, about 11 percent in the 1950s and about 14 percent in the 1970s, and only about 8 percent date from 1990 or later. Many older garages have openings that are not a standard size, and doors and openers from the mid-century decades have usually been replaced at least once.
About 73 percent of the city's homes are single-family detached houses and about 18 percent are in buildings of five units or more; about 57 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Wikipedia says Lincoln Park is a locally designated historic district, and the city's Historic Preservation Commission says exterior work there may need a Certificate of Appropriateness. We could not verify whether replacing a garage door in the district needs one, so ask the city before you order. We also could not verify any homeowners' association rules.
Tell us your cross street and whether the door is a single, a double or a pair, and we book the soonest visit. We weigh and balance each door before choosing new springs.

What customers say
Real reviews from our Google listing, copied as the customers wrote them.
My garage door and opener were pretty banged up and not working properly. Emil Garage Doors came out, did a thorough evaluation of door and all it's parts. Even though the previous home owner rigged up the garage door opener with the wrong springs and parts, Emil repaired the door and saved us money by using some of the old parts. That kind of honesty will get 5 stars all day long. Thank you Emil Garage Doors for your great service.Bradford · Google review
I woke up to a loud crash when a tree in my front yard fell over and hit my garage door. Emil Garage Doors was able to give be a really good price on a new garage door. They uninstalled the old, damaged door and realigned the tracks the garage door connects to which had been damaged as well. The new door looks great and most importantly functions well. Thank you for going above and beyond in my time of need!Stuart · Google review
They were able to come within a few hours of my call. Another company could only give me a 4 hour window of arrival time the next day, but these guys was able to give me a 2 hour window the same day. One the guys called before arriving. He was friendly and competent in explaining the problem and our options. I was so grateful he had replacement springs and was able to fix our garage door in less than an hour.David · Google review
Not paying attention I closed the garage door on a pipe laying in the track. Needless to say it did some damage even though the automatic reverse opened the door back up. Emailed what happened on Sunday evening. Appointment with quote provided in just a few minutes and appointment confirmed. Once again they arrived on time. Completed repairs quickly and for less then the quote. Cleaned up like they were never there. I highly recommend them and will continue to use them for my garage door repairs.Carroll · Google review
Technician showed up on time, assessed our issue & presented replacement options. He proceeded to install new equipment during the same visit and everything was finished in less than two hours. We were impressed with the performance of our tech. It’s easy for us to recommend this company.Kathleen · Google review
The replacement of my broken spring was done quickly and professionaly. I was also provided an explanation on why the tension was set as it was. I was called in advance to be informed of the arrival time. Great job as it has been in the pastFrancine · Google review

What your garage door is telling you in Danville
A starting point. We confirm the cause on site.
| The door does this | Common cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Slams down or will not lift | A broken torsion spring | Replace the spring set, balance the door, test the safety reverse |
| Opener hums but the door stays put | A broken spring or a disconnected trolley | Find which one failed, then repair and rebalance |
| One side hangs lower than the other | A slipped or snapped lift cable | Replace the cable, check the drum and level the door |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Dry or worn rollers, loose hinges | Replace rollers and hinges, lubricate and tighten |
| Reverses before it reaches the floor | Misaligned or dirty safety sensors | Clean and realign the sensors, test the reverse |
Do not run a door that is crooked or heavy.
Opener safety, permits and design rules in Danville
Opener safety. The federal standard for residential garage door operators (Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16 CFR part 1211) calls for automatic reversing and entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors. If yours stopped working, we test the reverse and the sensors and repair or replace what failed. See opener installation.
Design rules. Planned communities and historic districts can limit door style and color. Ask before you choose a new door: new garage doors.
City permits. Danville is an incorporated city with its own government. Its Building Safety office, part of Community Development, is at 1155 East Voorhees Street, phone 217-431-2321, email permits@cityofdanville.org, on cityofdanville.org. The city accepts building permit applications through its online Citizen Serve portal only, and contractors fill in a Contractor Registration Form before working in the city. The permits page names new construction, pools, sidewalks, driveways and other work but does not name doors or garage doors, so we could not confirm whether a replacement garage door or an opener swap needs a permit. Ask the office before the work. In the Lincoln Park Historic District the city says exterior work that needs a permit must have an approved Certificate of Appropriateness first; its page does not mention doors, so ask the city if you live there.
State rules. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions has no garage door, overhead door or general contractor category, so we found no state garage door contractor license. The Illinois Attorney General's home repair page says contractors should give the Home Repair Consumer Rights document on jobs valued at $1,000 or more and lists what a written contract must say.

Danville garage door repair: questions we hear
Is there garage door repair near me in Danville?
Yes. Emil Garage Doors repairs garage doors in Danville (ZIP 61832) and the neighborhoods next door. Call (312) 620-1952, tell us your street or neighborhood and what the door does, and we book the soonest visit. See garage door repair near me.
What is the average price to repair a garage door in Danville?
Typical prices: a 12-point safety inspection is $89, a torsion spring pair for a standard two-car door is $250 to $450 (heavy-duty springs $350 to $900), a cable pair is $175 to $350, and a belt-drive opener installed with battery backup is $550 to $900. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.
What is the most common garage door repair in Danville?
Broken torsion springs are among the most common garage door repairs, because springs wear out after a set number of open-and-close cycles. Cables, rollers, safety sensors and off-track doors follow. See garage door spring repair.
How much is a service call for a garage door?
Our 12-point safety inspection is $89. It covers the springs, cables, rollers, tracks, sensors and opener, and we explain what we find before any repair starts.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
A repair is usually cheaper when the door itself is sound and only a spring, cable, roller or sensor failed. Replacement makes sense when panels are bent or rotted, the door is very old or the opening needs a different size. We tell you which one fits before we start.
Which ZIP codes do you serve in Danville?
Danville's ZIP codes are 61832 and 61834, according to Wikipedia. A ZIP directory also lists 61833 and ties the Tilton name to 61832. Call us if your address is near Tilton and you are not sure we reach it.
Do you service older garage doors in Danville?
Yes. About 60 percent of Danville homes were built before 1960 and about 72 percent before 1970, according to Census estimates, so many doors, springs and openers are worn or already replaced once. We measure the opening, weigh and balance the door and explain what we find before we quote.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Danville?
We could not confirm it. The city's permit page does not name garage doors, so call Building Safety at 217-431-2321 before you order a door, and ask about the Certificate of Appropriateness if you live in Lincoln Park.
Do you repair garage doors after a storm in Danville?
Yes. Strong wind can bend tracks or push a door out of its frame, and a falling branch can dent panels. We inspect the track, panels, springs and opener, explain what we find and quote the price before we start.
How do I test my garage door's safety reverse and sensors?
Close the door with the opener, then lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path. The door should touch it and reverse. For the sensors, start the door closing and pass a broom handle through the beam near the floor. The door should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the automatic close and call us for a repair.
