Does Illinois Homeowners Insurance Cover Garage Doors?

By Emil Garage Doors · Published November 2, 2026 · 4 min read · Costs and prices

Short answer

Sometimes. A home policy typically covers sudden or accidental damage to your house and attached structures, which can include an attached garage door, but it usually does not cover wear and tear or lack of maintenance. Photograph the damage, protect the door, keep receipts and read your own policy before you file.

Is a garage door covered?

The Illinois Department of Insurance says homeowners coverage for the dwelling pays for damage caused by a sudden or accidental occurrence to your house and attached structures. A door on an attached garage is part of that. Damage to freestanding garages and other structures not attached to the house is listed under a separate heading, other structures.

Policies differ in what they list and what they exclude, and this article cannot tell you what yours says. Read the policy or ask your agent.

What is usually not covered

The department's guide says policies do not cover damage from wear and tear, age, rotting or lack of maintenance. That matters for garage doors, because most repairs are for parts that wear out over time, such as springs, rollers and cables.

A flood is also listed as something a typical policy does not cover, and the guide says you may be able to buy separate coverage.

What to do after the damage

The department's storm guidance gives a plain order of steps:

  1. Call your agent

Give a detailed description of the damage.

  2. Photograph before cleanup

Take photos only if the area is safe to reach, and do it before you clean up.

  3. Make temporary repairs

Protect the property from more damage and save the receipts for supplies; the department says the insurer reimburses reasonable expenses.

  4. Keep every record

Keep bills and receipts related to repairs.

  5. Get the estimate

If an adjuster visits, get a name and number and a copy of the estimate. Ask questions.

The deductible and the repair bill

Your deductible is the part of a covered loss you pay first. The department's guide notes that a higher deductible lowers the premium but you pay more of a small loss yourself. A repair for one panel or a bent track may cost less than a deductible, so get a written estimate before you decide to file.

A technician's quote that lists each part and the labor also gives the adjuster something to compare. See garage door repair and new garage doors. The final price is confirmed after we see the door.

Actual cash value or replacement cost

The guide explains that actual cash value pays the replacement cost minus depreciation, which is the drop in value from age or wear. Check which method your policy uses, because it changes what a claim pays for an older door.
